Extant, the CBS 2014 science fiction series starring Halle Berry, is now available on Netflix. The mystery series, which was executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, follows the story of astronaut Molly Woods, portrayed by Berry, who comes back to Earth after a solo mission in space for 13 months. The twist? She is pregnant. The mystery surrounding her pregnancy and its repercussions on humanity becomes the focal plot.
Created by Mickey Fisher, Extant ran on CBS from 2014 to 2015 for two seasons. Despite the star power of Oscar-winning Halle Berry and Steven Spielberg, the show was surprisingly cancelled. After about 10 years, the show has found a new home with the streaming platform Netflix, where new audiences will get the opportunity to watch this distinctive and intriguing story. Extant also stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Pierce Gagnon, Goran Visnjic, Hiroyuki Sanada, Grace Gummer, Michael O'Neill, and Camryn Manheim.
What is the sci-fi series about?
Molly Woods (played by Halle Berry) is an astronaut who was on a 13-month solo mission in outer space. When she returns to Earth and undergoes a medical test, she discovers that she is pregnant. For someone struggling with fertility, this is shocking information. It will also have implications for humanity as a whole.
Molly, her husband, Dr. John Woods (played by Goran Visnjic), and son Ethan (played by Pierce Gagnon) look perfectly ordinary to any outsider. But when you look closer, you learn that Ethan is a humanoid robot designed by Dr. John. He is seeking funding to develop ‘humanich’ with Ethan as the prototype. The six-year-old boy with a highly advanced AI structure, however, struggles with the nuances of ethics. A lowkey mad scientist, Dr. John, does get the attention of someone from the Yasumoto Corp.
Molly will give birth to a telepathic alien with the perilous ability to influence humans and wildlife. After Molly’s husband dies under suspicious circumstances, she gets entangled in an investigation involving the death of a woman who was pregnant with an alien child. What follows is the weaponization of humanichs and alien hybrids.
Extant explores the many dilemmas in the modern world that struggle to find the blurring line between artificial intelligence and humanity. It is a suspense drama series that looks at human dynamics like never before. The series ends with some critical questions, and the viewers may be left with a frustrated cliffhanger. Nonetheless, it is a journey worth going on.
