Watson Season 2 might be home to even more characters from the Sherlock Holmes universe. Watson, a modern take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic character, starring Morris Chestnut as the titular doctor, finally premiered its Season 1 finale. It was an exhilarating ride to witness this drama mystery wrap up its debut season with a bang.
CBS has been cancelling projects left and right, but thankfully, Watson was not on this list and has, in fact, been renewed for a second season. Recently, Craig Sweeney, executive producer for the show, talked about new characters that can be expected in the second season from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's universe.
Here's everything he revealed about Watson Season 2.
New Characters from Sherlock Holmes who might be seen in Watson Season 2

Throughout the Watson Season 1, we saw a ton of characters from the Sherlock Holmes universe, including Moriarty, the season's villain, and Mary Morstan. Even Sherlock was mentioned in the premiere episodes when he appeared to have been killed off.
Craig Sweeney, when talking about the season 1 finale, opened up about the possibilities for Watson Season 2. He revealed that there might be new Sherlock Holmes characters in Season 2. Even though he refrained from revealing exactly who these characters would be, he did mention that he was really impressed by Rachel Hayward, who plays the Pittsburgh Police Detective Lestrade. So, there is a high possibility that she will be seen on Watson Season 2.
"There will be, yes. But I don’t want to do any reveals just yet. This is not a reveal, but I am excited that we have, I really love the performer who plays Lestrade on our show, and I’m excited to explore that relationship more in Season 2. Yeah, she really drew out the funny side of Morris. They were just such a delight to watch together. That was fun to see."
When asked about villains from the Sherlock Holmes universe such as Charles Augustus Milverton or Culverton Smith, Sweeney revealed that even though the second season might go the route of choosing a villain from the Doyle universe, like Moriarty in Season 1, Watson Season 2 will not revolve around the villain and will instead take a new storytelling route.
Yes. So what I like about our plan in Season 2 is that we’re definitely not saying that no more villains from the Holmes universe appear, but we are creating a paradigm that includes Conan Doyle’s world without saying the premise is always what villain appears this year. So there is a really strong Holmesian storyline, but our plan is not to say, oh, this is Gruner or Milverton. Not to say that we won’t do that in time, but we wanted to sort of open up the paradigm of a new kind of storytelling within that universe in Season 2. So that’s our approach there.
Additionally, Sweeney also revealed that all of the main characters will be seen back in their capacity as regulars on Watson Season 2.
It is going to be exciting to witness another season of this medical procedural with the intriguing characters in the Sherlock Holmes universe. There is no update regarding the release of the next season, but Watson Season 2 can be expected in 2026.
