What role does Carson Blyskal play in The Summer I Turned Pretty? Character explored, in depth

Carson Blyskal is the latest actor to join the cast of The Summer I Turned Pretty season three. Episode seven of the third season, Last Hurrah, takes us to the bride and groom's bachelorette and bachelor parties, and we see Carson Blyskal as Blake.

Blake wasn't in The Summer I Turned Pretty books, but he is a character in the show, which makes one wonder who he is and why he was created for the show. Blake is Jeremiah's friend, who has come to Cousins for the wedding along with Jeremiah's other friends, Ethan and Redbird. But that's not it, more to the story.

Who is Blake in The Summer I Turned Pretty?

Blake, unlike Ethan and Redbird, has been introduced quite late in the season. There could be two reasons behind that. One reason could be that Blake was simply occupied with his own life and is finally part of the story as he is a wedding guest. The other reason could be that he has a bigger role to play in the story, other than just being Jeremiah's friend.

The second reason is a possibility because a while after Blake arrives, Belly tells her friends that he is Jeremiah's ex. This is also the episode when we find out that Jeremiah is bisexual and had dated Blake before he dated Belly. You might be wondering why Belly would be okay with Jeremiah inviting an ex to their wedding, as were her friends. But, Belly dated Jeremiah's brother, who is also part of their wedding and their lives. Hence, Belly doesn't really have much of a moral high ground here.

While we met Blake (played by Carson Blyskal) for the first time in season three, we had heard about him back in season two. In season two of The Summer I Turned Pretty, Jeremiah said that he went to homecoming with Blake. Back then, viewers did not make much of it; many thought that they were just platonic dates. But as it turns out, the two used to date.

The Summer I Turned Pretty season three episode seven also featured a heartbreaking confession scene by Conrad, where he says,

"I still love you..."

Followed by a final plea,

"Don't be with him. Don't marry him. Be with me."

It was the first time he said what he really wanted. We've seen Conrad in pain since Belly and Jeremiah got engaged, and he finally verbalizes his pain to her. While she walks away from him for now, her thoughts of him on the dance floor tell us how much she loves him. So we know there's more to happen between Belly and Conrad, something that might even stop the wedding.

With Blake in the picture, something might rekindle between him and Jeremiah as well. Nothing has been confirmed, and there have been no hints of them still having tension, but it is unlikely that Blake would be introduced in the show (when he doesn't exist in the books) just as an ex of Jeremiah who comes to attend his wedding.

As of now, Belly and Jeremiah are heading towards their wedding day, despite Belly having obvious doubts. We will find out if Blake has a larger role to play in the show or not in future episodes.
