It was in season 1 that Allbright's characters got maximum screentime and appeared for a few episodes. Her character remained central to Malcolm's story; however, she never reciprocated Malcom's feelings.

Julie makes her first appearance in the very first episode, as mentioned, sitting next to Malcolm in art class. She compliments Malcolm's artwork, and that is when they talk a little. This is when Dave catches them and plays a trick on Malcolm later to humiliate her in front of Julie. He tricks him into sitting on red paint staining his pants. Later, Julie also sees them fighting nervously from a distance.

Malcolm in the Middle Season 1 then builds on Malcolm's infatuation with Julie and strikes the most significant episode exploring their dynamics. In one of the scenes, Malcolm and Julie are seen sharing their tiffins, and that is when Malcolm realizes his family's poverty and how privileged other kids, especially Julie, are. Later in the episode, when Malcolm is ranting about this to Stevie, Julie overhears and decides to hold a food drive in his name. Julie does it out of kindness and innocence to help a friend and his family, but for Malcolm, it's humiliating seeing other kids of his age donating food to him. He eventually lashes out at Julie, calling her out and saying how he doesn't need her charity.

In the last episode of Malcolm in the Middle, Julie and Malcolm are about to go to a concert together. That is when Malcolm's mother tells him to attend a funeral, and Malcolm cancels their plan. Julie, on the other hand, gets ready to take someone else in place of Malcolm, which makes him jealous. He convinces Lois to skip the funeral and instead call Julie over to his house. Everybody has told Julie not to visit his house, but Julie finds it silly. When she enters, she finds his father listening to loud music while his mother is resting.

The kids are cleaning the kitchen floor where they have poured some juice. Julie asks about Malcolm and enters the house. Malcolm's pant is ruined and he is ironing them at the moment, just wearing underwear. Julie enters his room and panics, looking at him like that. She runs back and slips into the soapy kitchen, her face submerging into a pile of garbage.

Julie breaks down. She tells Malcolm that she was just being nice to him. When Malcolm apologizes to him, she refuses his apology and walks out of Malcolm's life and from the show itself.
