Prime Video is preparing to release a psychological thriller, The Girlfriend, this September, with Robin Wright both directing and starring. The show is based on Michelle Frances’ novel, so expect family drama, a mix of suspense, and shifting loyalties.

The series throws you into a maze of mind games, paranoia, and all the complications that come with family love. It’s viewed entirely through Laura’s perspective, and she’s spiraling. You might start to wonder, can a mom’s protective instinct go off the rails? At what point does love just turn into pure control?

The Girlfriend features Robin Wright as Laura, a woman who appears to have her life all shiny and perfect, at least from the outside. She has a good job, a solid marriage, and her greatest pride: her son, Daniel. But the arrival of Daniel’s girlfriend, Cherry (played by Olivia Cooke), triggers Laura’s deepest fears.

Laura isn’t your typical mom. She’s sharp, elegant, and a bit too involved. She’s the kind of mom who believes she has a sixth sense for what’s best for her child... until she reaches the point of obsession. The Girlfriend revolves around this question: Is Cherry a smooth operator with a long game, or is Laura just spiraling into full-blown paranoia?

Meanwhile, Wright isn’t just starring; she is also directing and producing. You can feel her influence everywhere, especially if you remember her vibe from House of Cards.

The Girlfriend premieres on Prime Video worldwide on September 10, 2025. The show is about how a small suspicion can ruin even the most perfect household. Laura, the mom, believes that Cherry (her son Daniel’s girlfriend) is the villain in disguise. She becomes fixated on exposing Cherry as a home-wrecker. But in reality, Laura’s own paranoia might be the biggest threat.

Each episode is a trip: one minute you think Laura has a point, the next you feel like she needs a break. It’s a tightrope walk between valid worry and she has lost it.

Cast-wise, we have Robin Wright playing Laura, the mother hanging on by a thread. Olivia Cooke portrays Cherry, the girlfriend who could be innocent or guilty. Laurie Davidson is Daniel, the son caught in the middle. Waleed Zuaiter joins as Howard, someone Laura depends on.

Then there’s a whole ensemble: Anna Chancellor, Francesca Corney, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Karen Henthorn, Leo Suter, Tanya Moodie, mixing things up and making the drama even fresher.

Behind the curtain, Robin Wright is calling the shots as director and producer, too. Gabbie Asher and Naomi Sheldon are handling the adaptation, bringing Frances’ novel to the screen. Filming took place in London and parts of Spain, capturing both cozy family vibes and some jet-setter scenery.

There are six episodes, each with a different writer adding their twist, so it won’t get stale. Wright’s guiding the whole project, keeping things sharp and stylish from start to finish. If you like your family drama with a touch of psychological warfare and a hint of uncertainty, this one’s got your name on it.
