J. Smith-Cameron has been confirmed as a guest star for Season 3 of CBS’s mystery series, Elsbeth. Variety confirmed this in an exclusive report on December 17, 2025.

The Succession legend herself is rolling up to CBS’s quirky mystery show. If you haven’t been watching, Elsbeth is an offbeat spinoff from The Good Wife and The Good Fight, created by Robert and Michelle King. The show attracts viewers of the crime procedural genre from a fresh angle with some comedic elements intertwined in its murder-mystery format.

Smith-Cameron’s part in the series is the newest addition to a show that has been full of iconic guest stars since the beginning. Besides, the announcement has caused a sharp rise in the level of interest and anticipation among the fans who are already very much aware of the talents offered by Smith-Cameron.

Smith-Cameron will play the role of Isadora, or Izzy for short, who is the head organizer of New York's most elite coming-out party. The character has been characterized as a dominant personality among the high-society people in Manhattan, one who is feared and respected at the same time. On top of everything, she has set the bar very high in terms of the quality of her standards in the area.

This particular casting suggests that it is a guest-starring role and not a recurring or main character position. Hence, the audience should anticipate Smith-Cameron’s appearance in a few selected episodes revolving around one particular case only.

Based on the official logline that the network released, the plot surrounding Izzy revolves around a revenge scheme that is based on a past disgrace. Apparently, the current season’s debutante’s dad is someone who humiliated Izzy back at her own big society debut. Now she is all grown up and running the show as Queen Bee, and she wants to pull off a calculated revenge.

The way the plot is set up indicates a classical Elsbeth murder mystery, where the old personal matters are brought back to life only to be ruled and dealt with by their consequences in the present. It makes a perfect puzzle for the detective to piece together.

The Elsbeth episode featuring Smith-Cameron is titled A Hard Nut to Crack. It will be broadcast on December 18, 2025. The episode will portray a radical choreographer's Nutcracker rehearsal, which is going to be deadly as Elsbeth probes the ruthless scene of New York ballet. Although the main episode synopsis is centered on ballet, Izzy's participation in the debutante ball indicates that the case can mingle with different areas of Manhattan's high society.

Smith-Cameron became well known for her Gerri Kellman character on HBO's Succession, which brought her two Emmy nominations, one Golden Globe nomination, and one Critics' Choice Award nomination, among other accolades. The actress's participation in that show, which was aired in 2023, was marked by the combination of her brilliant intellect with very fine humor and emotional intensity.

Now, the actress is bringing a serious game to Elsbeth. She was recently seen in Murdaugh: A Death in the Family, then showed up in Hacks, Search Party, and Rectify. She can pretty much do anything, which is exactly what Elsbeth needs. The show is all over the map, hopping from solving murders to dropping hilarious, offbeat moments and giving its characters a quirky depth.

What’s cool about Elsbeth is that it doesn’t play by the usual whodunit rules. You don’t spend an hour guessing who did it. They show you the killer right up front, and you see the whole crime go down before Elsbeth even strolls onto the scene. The fun is in watching her untangle the box in the culprit while they try (and fail) to keep their poker face.

That setup is gold for guest stars as it gives them a chance to play both sides: act innocent while the audience already knows they are guilty. Someone like Smith-Cameron is expected to ace the role.

The casting news dropped just as the show is riding high, three seasons in and still killing it (pun intended). The third season dropped on October 12, 2025, after CBS gave it the green light back in February. Critics keep singing its praises, and fans like its lighter, more hopeful vibe. It’s a breath of fresh air when most TV crime shows are going all gritty and bleak.

The show revolves around Elsbeth Tascioni, a not-so-traditional lawyer who leaves her brilliant legal career in Chicago to be a private eye in New York City. Carrie Preston, the actress, first played the role of Elsbeth Tascioni in The Good Wife back in 2010 and received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for playing the eccentric, seemingly scatter-brained yet clever lawyer in 2013.

The premise of the show has the main character moving to Manhattan, where she accepts the role of consultant and observer to the NYPD. Although her official position is to oversee the police department after corruption problems, she soon gets involved in ongoing murder investigations.

Together with Wendell Pierce's Captain C.W. Wagner and initially with Carra Patterson's Officer Kaya Blanke, Elsbeth uses her extraordinary viewpoint and keen perception to unravel crimes that leave the ordinary detectives puzzled.
