What role will John Malkovich play in Bad Monkey Season 2?

As mentioned, John Malkovich has joined the Apple TV show Bad Monkey in its Season 2 as Spencer, the head of a major South Florida criminal organisation. The story follows Andrew Yancy, a disgraced ex-detective turned health inspector in the Florida Keys. The show got renewed in December 2024, and now the news of Malkovich playing Spencer against the lead character brings forth a high-stakes element, suggesting that Spencer won't be an ordinary gangster.
The first season featured a strong lineup alongside Vince Vaughn, including L. Scott Caldwell, Rob Delaney, Meredith Hagner, Natalie Martinez, Alex Moffat, Michelle Monaghan, Ronald Peet, and Jodie Turner-Smith.
Bill Lawrence, who is known for Ted Lasso, Scrubs, and Shrinking, revealed that he pitched the series as a 3-season arc in which Season 1 is supposed to introduce Andrew and the case of a severed arm, while Season 2 will have higher stakes with characters like Spencer creating some major obstacles for the protagonist and exploring the underground criminal world better. Season 3 will be the concluding season to end the character's journey.
Lawrence said while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter,
“When I pitched it [to Apple], I had a beginning, middle and end of a three-season arc for this character, and for who he would be and where he would get to — and they were really receptive to it. It’s challenging right now to make shows, and especially to pick up your life and go make it. [Vaughn and I] both moved to Florida! It was insane.”
Lawrence also stated that, as he and Vaughn have both shifted to Florida for the series, there's nothing like the experience of completely immersing oneself in the character's life. His motive is to tell season-long stories where you watch characters transform, some redeem themselves, and others fall further into corruption.
He also elaborated on a subversive environmental undercurrent in the series, running within the character of Carl, given his background as a journalist.
Season 2 of Bad Monkey has been under development, but there has been no information regarding the release date from Apple TV+.
