The recent Instagram post by The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Tom Raider has found its new Lara Croft, and it is going to be Game of Thrones fame Sophie Turner. The caption of the post also confirmed that the production of the Prime Video live-action series is scheduled to begin on January 19, 2026.

The show is based on the iconic video game franchise first released in 1996, which follows the thrilling adventures of a British archaeologist. Sophie Turner has officially been cast as the adventurer in Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s upcoming adaptation. Turner acknowledged that stepping into the role carries immense responsibility, especially given the legacy of past portrayals of Lara Croft.

What role will Sophie Turner play in Tom Raider?

As mentioned, Sophie Turner will be playing the lead role in Tom Raider as Lara Croft. She becomes the third live-action Lara Croft, following Angelina Jolie in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in 2001 & The Cradle of Life in 2003, and Alicia Vikander in the Tomb Raider reboot in 2018.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who also serves as writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner, expressed her excitement while introducing Sophie as Lara.

“I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team,” Waller-Bridge said in a statement, per reports.

She further explained how the team is passionate about Lara and their energy is "brave and hilarious," just like the character.

“It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out — Croft is coming.”

Along with this, Jonathan Van Tulleken will be directing the show and serving as another executive producer alongside Bridge. Chad Hodge has confirmed his role as the co-showrunner.

Sophie Turner, while accepting the role in Tom Raider, explained how excited she is about being the new Lara Croft and also emphasised the massive responsibility as she needs to be on par with Angeline and Alicia's performances.

“I am thrilled beyond measure to be playing Lara Croft. She’s such an iconic character who means so much to so many, and I am giving everything I’ve got. They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking.”

Sophie Turner’s recent work includes The Staircase (HBO Max) and Joan (ITV/CW).

The reports confirm that the show is going on floors in January 2026, but no official information has been shared mentioning the release date of the much-anticipated Tom Raider.
