Original Harry Potter film director baffled by the new TV series adaptation
The leaked set images evoke a feeling of reminiscing about the old and excitement for something new at the same time, making it impossible for any Harry Potter fan not to be affected by these pictures. Especially when the original actor who played the character in the films passed away not so long ago. Such was the case for Nick Frost's picture as Hagrid, released through the official channels.
In the picture, Nick Frost's Hagrid is wearing a very dark, earthy green-colored coat, similar to the coat that Hagrid was wearing in the films when he picked up Harry from the Dursleys.
Christopher Columbus, when asked about the new adaptation, expressed that it was somewhat baffling for him to see the set pictures. He revealed that the new pictures were very similar to Robbie Coltrane's costume in the first film. The fact that the new costumes and body doubles were similar to the film's costumes led him to question what the point was behind the new adaptation when it is similar to the films in the first place:
"So, I’m seeing these photographs … and he’s wearing the exact same costume that we designed for Hagrid. Part of me was like: What’s the point? I thought everything was going to be different, but it’s more of the same. It’s all going to be the same. It’s very flattering for me, because I’m like, that’s exactly the Hagrid costume that we designed. So, part of it is really exciting, so I’m excited to see what they’re going to do with it. Part of it is sort of deja vu all over again."
While he expressed feeling confused and baffled by the similarities between the adaptation and the film, he also added that it was exciting to witness things come to life and to look forward to the new series.
He also went on to express that even though he had worked on a very everlasting piece of culture, he had moved on from the Harry Potter films and the idea of the franchise. For him, those are pieces of art that he was involved with and is proud of, but he is now moving on from them to other things.
"Jealous? No. It’s time to move on. I’ve always had issues with [the] idea of franchise. I feel like I’ve done it … I’m really proud of those films, the first three that I was involved with, and I’m moving on."
Christopher might've moved on from the films, but for the fans, who watched their fictional wizarding world come to life in the films because of the books, they consider it a golden chance to walk down memory lane with a TV series, which is a much more faithful adaptation of the Harry Potter books waiting at the end.
