Monica Raymund’s Gabby Dawson had been a huge part of Chicago Fire since the first season of the show. However, in Chicago Fire Season 6, she left the show and while she made a brief appearance in the next season, Season 6 marks her last proper appearance in the series.

At the end of Season 6, it was revealed that Gabby has got an opportunity to go to Puerto Rico and serve the people in need there. Though initially hesitant about taking up the offer, Gabby ultimately decides to go, marking her exit from the show.

While Gabby’s character was an extremely well-loved and important character in the show who had major plot points revolving around her, Dawson left the show due to personal reasons. Talking to the Chicago Tribune in 2018, the actor said,

“I’m not sure the exact moment when it happened, but I knew that my six-year contract was coming to an end and I felt like I was hungry to explore a different role, a different story.”

Her words show that her desire to explore something out of what she had been doing for a very long time fueled her exit from Chicago Fire.

Making her first appearance in the pilot episode of Chicago Fire Season 1, Gabby was shown as an important member of Firehouse 51. As a first responder, she dealt with a number of crucial cases and brilliantly did her job. Her relationship with Matthew Casey was one of the key fan-favorite arcs of the show, as fans lovingly called them Dawsey.

While they got married in Season 5, the couple did not survive Gabby’s decision to go to Puerto Rico, and they got divorced. They were already having problems in their marriage and while Gabby thought that going to Puerto Rico would offer some temporary space they both needed, the couple ultimately ended up splitting.

Talking about her decision to leave a character that was so popular, Raymund said in the same interview with the Chicago Tribune,

“I wanted to explore a different world. I had been in Chicago for five years and just personally where I was in my life, I was ready to create my home and kind of plant some roots in Los Angeles.”

She further added,

“It’s kind of a double-edged sword because on the one hand, it’s wonderful to be employed for that long and to have job security. And to be able to delve into a storyline and to flush it out over that amount of time. To get that opportunity is extremely rare and special. Job security is always the two favorite words an actor can say! But sometimes you have to take a risk to diversify your opportunities.”

While her decision to leave was based on her own personal choices, fans continue to love Gabby even today.

Chicago Fire can be streamed on Peacock.
