We're closer than ever to Gen V Season 2, scheduled for a September 17 release, and while the Godolkin University students prepare themselves for another year of hunting down secret ongoing projects in the university, let's take a look at how The Boys spin-off's second season fits into the universe.
The Gen V and The Boys creator Eric Kripke has previously revealed that the sophomore season of the spin-off is set to act as a bridge between Seasons 4 and 5 of The Boys. This means that the second season of Gen-V will take place after the events of The Boys Season 4 and before the events of the upcoming Season 5.
Here's a deeper understanding of The Boys timeline to better understand the following: when does Gen V Season 2 take place, and how does it act as a bridge?
Gen V Season 2 as a bridge between The Boys Seasons 4 and 5
While it is fairly simple to understand that the sophomore season of the spin-off, which is being released after Season 4 of The Boys and before Season 5, is a bridge between the two seasons, the timeline will be much clearer by taking a look at the events in both shows and how they're set to connect.
The Boys Season 4 featured Homelander rising out of the Vought banner, shedding off his do-gooder persona in front of the American citizens, and still managing to take over the leadership of the country while the gang against him tried and failed to create a superhuman virus to defeat him. By the end of the season, most of the gang has been captured by Homelander's superhuman minions. The Season 4 finale sets up a Homelander-run America right around inauguration day, placing it in January.
The second season of the spin-off sets up the sophomore year starting for Marie and her friends, placing it in August in the timeline. Therefore, Gen V Season 2 takes place more than half a year into the Homelander-run America, setting up the events for the fifth season of The Boys.
The trailer, which premiered for Season 2 of the spin-off, also revealed that several characters from The Boys, including Annie January, are also set to make an appearance in Gen V Season 2, ensuring that The Boys plot is never too far from the viewer's consciousness.
Creator Eric Kripke has also revealed that a lot of the second season of Gen V will contribute to setting up the fifth and final season of The Boys. Kripke revealed that while Gen V will stick to its identity as a standalone spin-off, a lot of the events in Season 2 will set up the final climactic confrontation in the universe:
"There's a lot in Gen V that really helps set up the climax of this final confrontation in The Boys."
The Gen V Season 2 official synopsis sets up this timeline very clearly:
"As the rest of America adjusts to Homelander's iron fist, back at Godolkin University, the mysterious new Dean preaches a curriculum that promises to make students more powerful than ever.."
So, Gen V Season 2 is going to be an extremely important part of The Boys universe, and much like the supe virus in Gen V Season 1, which set up the events for Billy Butcher in The Boys Season 4, maybe this time around, Project Odyssey will be the key to the lock that is The Boys Season 5.
