Ruth Connell's first appearance on Supernatural as Rowena MacLeod continues to be one of the most iconic character introductions. Many memorable characters, some villains, some not, have come and gone on the CW show. Yet, the redhead witch who consistently gave the Winchester brothers a run for their money continues to reign.
As Supernatural continues to garner a huge and loyal fan following, even five years after it came to a close, here is a look back at the first appearance of one of the most iconic characters on the show.
Rowena MacLeod first appeared for just a few seconds at the end of the third episode of the tenth season, titled Soul Survivor. Those few seconds, where she sits comfortably reading a book while two men pinned to the ceiling bleed to their deaths, remain one of the most powerful character introductions.
Ruth Connell's first appearance on Supernatural as Rowena MacLeod

Rowena MacLeod is one of the major antagonists throughout Seasons 10 and 11 of Supernatural. While she had been mentioned by her son, Fergus (now Crowley), as the source of his limited knowledge of witchcraft, Ruth Connell had not yet appeared on the show. It wasn’t until the tenth season that she made her debut as Rowena MacLeod on the CW series.
In the third episode of the tenth season, Dean and Sam go through an excruciating ordeal that brings out the worst in them. During this, Sam tries to save Dean from the Mark of Cain and from turning into a demon. Dean lashes out at Sam to avoid being healed, but Sam endures it and, with a little help from Castiel, manages to heal Dean.
As Dean heals, and a note of relief forms, the shot cuts to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where a red-haired woman cozily sits in a hotel room. There's a fire burning in front of her, and some soothing music plays while she reads her book. It is the perfect picture of comfort and relief—until a drop of blood falls on her hand holding the book.
She looks up, and with her, the Supernatural audience also looks up to see two men brutally killed and pinned to the ceiling. She wipes the blood, smiles, and goes back to reading her book.

This perfect mix of horror and charm is how we meet Ruth Connell’s Rowena MacLeod on Supernatural—the red-haired witch who is destined to rule over the demons of Hell one day.
For now, we don’t see Rowena again until the seventh episode, titled Girls, Girls, Girls. In this episode, the Winchester brothers encounter bodies of dead demons at a brothel, killed by a spell called Defigere Et Depurgare. It is revealed that the only witch able to use this spell is its creator, marking the first mention of Rowena since her initial appearance in the third episode.
As she continues to create problems for the Winchester brothers throughout the seasons, for now, it is Crowley who must deal with his mother in the dungeon of Hell.
