Jessica Jones is a neo-noir superhero drama based on the Marvel character of the same name, which was released on Netflix in 2015, following a traumatized, privatized investigator with superhuman power in Hellville.
Jessica Jones, who is portrayed by Krysten Ritter, a cynical but sharp PI is one of the lead characters on the show fighting with her inner demons and having to deal with such strong opponents as Kilgrave and revealing her dark secrets.
Jessica Jones’ future is uncertain, but Marvel’s Brad Winderbaum says a revival is under discussion. He emphasizes the need for a meaningful story over nostalgia.
More about Jessica Jones and Brad Winderbaum
The initial Jessica Jones show had three seasons on Netflix. It received well, and was lauded because of its dark, character-driven storytelling and its focus on trauma, identity and power. The show was canceled by Netflix after the third season in 2019, and for some time, its future was unclear. The ambiguity was further increased by the change of the television approach of Marvel and the relocation of the rights by Netflix to Disney.
Brad Winderbaum has become one of the central figures in the debate on the resurgence of Jessica Jones. He has in his turn, publicly specified her as his favorite Netflix-Marvel character that he would most like to see reappear in the MCU, stating that the possibility of her reappearing is an item under discussion by Marvel.
During a recent interview on the Phase Hero podcast, Brad Winderbaum, provided an intriguing hint when asked about a potential Jessica Jones comeback. In response, he said,
"Maybe sooner than you think"
Winderbaum has been seen to be open which has attracted attention among fans as well as other cast members. Original Jessica star Krysten Ritter has reacted with great excitement when Winderbaum has talked about her returning. She also shared her excitement about the future of her character.
"There’s a lot of stuff that I’ve felt there was room to explore, and we’re going to be doing it.”
This is fueling speculation about what’s to come. With that said, there is not yet a confirmation of a revival. The most tangible event is Jessica Jones being confirmed to feature in the Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 where Ritter will reprise her role, putting her back into the Marvel Universe.
The indication of that move is that Marvel is slowly getting its toes in live shows, trying them out before investing in a standalone show. Provided that it is successful, a Season 4 or reinterpretation of Jessica Jones as a standalone series can become possible.
