Jimmy Kimmel Live! has been off air temporarily since September 17, 2025, following Jimmy Kimmel's statements regarding the MAGA movement's reaction to Charlie Kirk's death. This led Nexstar Media to announce that its ABC-affiliated stations would preempt Jimmy Kimmel Live! Following that, Disney (which owns ABC) suspended his show indefinitely.

The suspension was seen as a threat to freedom of speech by many Americans and media professionals. Many have spoken up against the suspension and stood by Kimmel. Now, as CNBC reports, Disney wants to bring back the late-night show on September 23, 2025.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! will be back soon

There have been several kinds of conversations after the American political activist, Charlie Kirk, passed away due to a fatal gunshot. Kirk was disliked by quite some Americans due to his political opinions, about which he has always been vocal. Late-night show host Jimmy Kimmel had expressed his opinions about the MAGA movement's reaction to Kirk's death, which was considered unprofessional.

As earlier mentioned, Disney, which owns ABC, suspended Kimmel's show. Fans and fellow media professionals like Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert, David Letterman, and Wanda Sykes insisted that not bringing back the show would be a big attack on Freedom of Speech. In an episode of The Tonight Show, host Jimmy Fallon addressed concerns about censorship while describing fellow late-night host Kimmel as kind and funny and expressing hope for his return.

Fallon also acknowledged the concerns about how at risk Freedom of Speech in America is right now, but promised to cover President Trump’s UK trip as usual. However, during his segment, parts of his comments were dubbed over with another voice that only praised the President, hinting at restrictions on what he could truly say. This indirect way suggested Fallon’s unease with the current state of free speech, which he underscored by ending with the line,

“And you can quote me on that!”

Marvel star Mark Ruffalo had also spoken up against the suspension, reposting a report of Disney's shares falling after they suspended the show, and said that Disney would lose more money if they didn't bring the show back. As CNBC reports, almost a week after Disney suspended the show indefinitely, they have announced that they will be bringing back the show from Tuesday. Disney's announcement, as reported by CNBC, reads,

“Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country. It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive."
“We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”

Thus, hopefully, if Kimmel is ready to come back and everything goes well, Jimmy Kimmel Live! will be back on air from Tuesday, September 23rd, 2025.

Released episodes of Jimmy Kimmel Live! are available for streaming on Hulu.
