Outer Banks Season 5 is what fans are curious about, as the series has been a fan favorite on Netflix ever since it dropped back in 2020. It mixes adventure, mystery, and romance with that laid-back beach vibe, and people connected with it.

Over the years, we’ve stuck with the Pogues, that tight group of teens from the working-class side of the island as they went on wild treasure hunts, uncovered big secrets, and faced off against some pretty dangerous enemies.

The stakes have only increased from season to season. Outer Banks has produced heartfelt, action-packed stories, ranging from intense betrayals to wild chases across the Caribbean. Now that season 5 has been confirmed as the last season, fans are both thrilled and sad to be leaving.

Although the renewal was announced back on November 4, 2024, Netflix has not yet disclosed the precise premiere date for Outer Banks Season 5. Production updates have been the focus of attention ever since.

Here is what we currently know about Outer Banks Season 5.

Is there a release date for Outer Banks Season 5?

Filming was originally scheduled to start in May 2025, but the date changed. Now scheduled to begin in June 2025, production is expected to last the remainder of the year.

Fans shouldn't anticipate the new season airing in 2025, given the show's previous schedules and the amount of post-production work required. A 2026 release, most likely in the spring or summer, is the more realistic estimate.

Depending on how the production and editing process works, it might even last until 2027 in a slower scenario. The fourth season debuted in two installments in October and November of 2024. Whether Netflix will continue with a traditional drop or replicate that split-release model for the final season is still up in the air.

The series was always meant to be a five-season series, as the show's creators have stated from the start. With significant emotional stakes, unresolved issues, and some tense confrontations ahead, Outer Banks Season 5 will mark the end of the Pogues' treasure hunt.

The terrible passing of JJ Maybank will be the subject of one of the main storylines. Chandler Groff, JJ's biological father, stabbed him to death in the shocking Season 4 finale and stole the Blue Crown treasure.

After burying JJ in Morocco, the Pogues are now resolved to find Groff in Portugal and bring him to justice. Co-creator Josh Pate claims that despite JJ's suffering, his passing was necessary to convey the story's theme of loyalty, loss, and redemption. Pate said:

"It was a really hard decision because he’s such a great piece of the ensemble... It sets the stage for an epic fifth and final season."

He continued:

"We’re planning a story of redemption, and a season that embodies the friendship that JJ had come to represent."

Another important storyline will follow John B and Sarah as they prepare to become parents. After Sarah found out she was pregnant in Season 4, the final season will explore how the couple deals with their new responsibilities while trying to heal from everything they’ve endured so far.

Who will return in Outer Banks Season 5?

Since the Pogues are the heart of the series, Outer Banks Season 5 will bring them all, except for the beloved character fans had to bid farewell to. The returning cast includes Chase Stokes (John B), Madelyn Cline (Sarah), Madison Bailey (Kiara), Jonathan Daviss (Pope), Carlacia Grant (Cleo), and all other key figures.

The finale chapter will complete the unsolved stories of characters like Rafe Cameron, who began a redemption arc in Season 4 and made peace with his sister Sarah, and will also return. His complicated relationship with Sofia, his ex-fiancée who betrayed him, will likely be addressed.

Not only Cameron, but Pope Heyward will also be back, along with Deputy Shoup, and not to forget that the Poguelandia plot isn’t over yet either. The land remains special to the Pogues, and saving it in JJ’s memory may become one of their main motivations.
