Fox's procedural drama 9-1-1: Lone Star debuted in January 2020, spanning across five successful seasons. Created by the trio Brad Falchuk, Tim Minear, and Ryan Murphy, this 9-1-1 spin-off series delves into the lives of Captain Owen Strand and his son T.K., who relocate to Austin following a tragedy. In Texas, Strand takes the responsibility to rebuild the Austin 126 Fire Department as he leads a bold and diverse team, who together battle explosive emergencies across the state. But behind the sirens, the team fights personal demons just as intense as the fires they fight.

But do you know that even though the show is based in Austin, Texas, only a handful of exterior scenes are shot in the Lone Star State? Surprisingly, most of the scenes from 9-1-1: Lone Star were filmed in Los Angeles, California.

9-1-1: Lone Star filming locations

1)Austin, Texas

Austin has become an increasingly popular filming location for TV shows as it offers varied landscapes, good infrastructure, and tax benefits. From 9-1-1: Lone Star to Austin City Limits, Austin provides a rich scenic versatility ranging from landscapes to suburban areas. It also offers a unique cultural experience that sets quite well with the vibe of any police procedural series.

In a 2020 Television Critics Association winter press tour, Tim Minear, the executive producer of the show, told Entertainment Now,

"We have shot in Austin. We sort of split the production, but we're based primarily here ."

Minear revealed that Austin was a perfect choice for the spin-off because it represents all elements of America. He continued,

"The thing that I think works so well on 911 is that kind of combination of blue sky and urban, like LA gives you everything, and Austin does as well. You have sort of the hipster culture. You have sort of Blue America in the middle of Red America. You have Red America around Blue America."

Even though Austin is not the primary filming location for 9-1-1: Lone Star, some exterior shots have been filmed here to maintain the authenticity of the series.

2) Los Angeles, California

Most of the show's scenes were filmed in Los Angeles, California, in the show's production house. Apart from Fox's production house, some of the other filming locations, as per IMDb, are:

  • Prince of Peace Episcopal Church, California: Located in Woodland Hills, California, this church was shown as Grace's Church.
  • Mothership Labs Research Institute: Located in Los Angeles, California, this permanently closed research institute served as the firehouse site for the series.
