Netflix's Boots dropped on October 9, 2025.

The drama follows Cameron Cope, a teenager participating in the Marine Boot Camp.

Cameron's story is unique because he is a closeted gay man surviving in the military during the 1990s, when being openly gay wasn't a thing, especially in the US military. The character also has a strong background story that adds layers to his persona and defines his journey and life choices. He sees joining the military as a parameter for acceptance in society and a way to stop the bullying.

Boots is layered with several themes around military discipline and how gay people were looked at through a prejudiced lens and not allowed to serve during that time. Cameron goes through the journey of self-expression and freedom and is finally able to make peace with what he is.

The show was shot in several locations, but New Orleans, Louisiana, served as the primary filming location.

As mentioned, the Netflix dramedy is shot utilizing some realistic and studio spaces, while the majority of the shoot took place in New Orleans. The production utilized an abandoned naval base to recreate the training facility. This helped them to get a gritty and period-authentic backdrop of a rigorous boot camp and the required training environment.

The makers chose to shoot in New Orleans not just because of the creatives but logistical reasons as well. The city offers a blend of historical architecture and landscapes matching the long-gone era. Moreover, keeping the location nearby saved a lot of the travelling time during the shoot, making it more efficient and budget-friendly.

New Orleans’ diverse landscapes and landmarks also feature prominently in the show, including St. Louis Cathedral, Four Seasons Hotel, Hancock Whitney Centre, Plaza Tower, New Orleans Marriott, and Crescent City Connection.

Boots is not the only show that has been shot there. New Orleans has been a major filming location for several notable projects like The Big Short, 21 Jump Street, Good Boys, and Killing It.

Along with the locations, another major highlight of the show is its songs, featuring some best-known artists, like Queen and their song, I Want to Break Free, to depict the mindset of someone like Cameron who is finding himself a misfit because of his gender identity and wants to escape. The show has some exaggerated comedy and equally intense scenes.

Cameron also meets another guy who has joined the military not by his choice but for his father's validation, who is also a decorated Marine officer.

The eight-episode season 1 of Boots dropped all of its episodes together on Thursday for the viewers to binge-watch.
