Broadchurch is set in the fictional town of the same name and is a crime drama unfurling against the backdrop of Dorset's coastline. Many interior scenes were filmed on soundstages, and the production mostly took place in real locations to capture the atmosphere required in the show.

The shooting primarily occurred in and around Clevedon, a seaside town in North Somerset, and the West Bay in Dorset. This small harbour resort offers some dramatic cliffs as visual icons of the series. In fact, the Dorset coast was so integral to the story that the first season was shot almost entirely on location. The 2013 British crime drama was shot in chronological order. This helped the cast stay in character and evolve their emotions as the series progressed. The discovery of Danny Latimer's body is the scene that ignites Broadchurch's central mystery. This is also where Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller meet for the first time.

This scene was shot on Harbour Cliff Beach; the visual adds to the haunting narrative and what lies ahead as Hardy takes a vow to find the killer. Another location was Jurassic Pier & West Bay Harbour. This location was used prominently for some atmospheric seaside shots. As per Giggster, the Folly on West Quay was used to depict the exterior of Wessex Police Station, while Ellipse Cafe served as the Broadchurch cafe, with its interiors appearing several times in the show.

Alec's house alongside the river was located on River Brit's bank, and the Echo Newspaper office of the town was near the West Bay green as the newsroom.

In Season 1, the community hall was built on Sea Brigade Hall, the old Methodist church. The setting of the bench scene between Miller and Hardy, the former detective club, was shown on the East Pier.

Briar Cliff Hut at Eype was used for showcasing the exterior of the hut where Danny met his end. The beach hut scenes from Season 2 between Claire and Lee were filmed on Charmouth Beach Huts, while the nightclub and roadside exteriors were from Weymouth.

Hill Road, Clevedon, stood in for Broadchurch's High Street, and churches like St. Andrew's Church were used as the parish church and the graveyard in all three seasons. Along with the real locations, some interior scenes were shot in Vision Studios near Bristol and Waterloo Film Studios, London. The studio shots also include the green screen scenes and other scenes where the makers needed more control and setup.

Therefore, many locations, on-site and off-site, were combined to create the world the crime drama desired. Season 3 of the show premiered in 2017, wrapping up the narrative.
