Gen V is a satirical superhero TV series that is a spin-off of the hit show The Boys. It takes place at Godolkin University, an imaginary university where young superheroes, or "supes," train and battle to become members of The Seven, the top superhero team overseen by the influential company Vought International.
The series delves into the moral and personal struggles of these students as they wrestle with their powers and aspirations in a cutthroat world. Power struggles, corruption, and identity are recurring themes throughout the narrative.
Gen V premiered on Amazon Prime Video in September 2023 and has since been picked up for a second season that continues to develop the intricate world established in season one.
Even though the series is set in New York City, all filming was done in Toronto and the surrounding areas. Season 1 was filmed from May to September 2022, and Season 2 resumed filming mostly in the same spots. The filming continued through 2024 and wrapped late in the year.
Key filming locations of Gen V
The University of Toronto Mississauga campus was the main filming location for Gen V. The campus's Maanjiwe nendamowinan building was utilized heavily for exterior shots of Godolkin University's front entrance. The Erindale Studio Theatre, which is located on the campus, served as an interior location for certain scenes.
The campus's configuration and state-of-the-art facilities enabled the show to create a credible university setting befitting the superhero school it shows in the series. Actress London Thor, a member of the cast, verified that the filming duration took approximately four months and highlighted the heavy utilization of the campus.
Sobeys Stadium at York University was another key location for shooting. It was transformed into Godolkin Stadium, where principal outdoor scenes, such as superhero sports and gatherings, were filmed.
The real-life purpose and size of the stadium accommodated the production's requirement for a big facility to shoot action scenes. In addition to the university campus, the stadium contributed to the show's authenticity of its superhero college backdrop.
Other filming locations
Gen V's shoot also involved a series of other Greater Toronto Area locations. Brampton's Claireville Conservation Area offered outdoor natural environments. It was utilized for shots that needed open, further-out rural or wooded settings and provided some diversity from the university-focused imagery.
The show was also shot at Massey College and Victoria University, both in downtown Toronto. The architectural styles of these schools provided the show with authentic academic settings for the various scenes. The formal and historic character of the colleges assisted in depicting elements of Godolkin University and provided depth to the background of the show.
The Stardust Drive-In Theatre in Newmarket, just 45 minutes outside of Toronto, had special sequences shot there. Its distinctive appearance provided a different backdrop for scenes independent of the university and the city. The Southwest Centre for Forensic Mental Health Care was also cited as a filming site, used for environments requiring an institutional feel in areas of the storylines.
Toronto Urban settings
Scenes that called for street scenes outside the campus were filmed on Toronto streets like St. Clair Avenue West. The locales provided the setting for the larger city surroundings of Godolkin University in the story, even though the tale is located in New York City.
Local streets were utilized by the production as well as background authenticity, sometimes aided by signage and set dressing to serve the fictional world.
Continuity in Season 2 Filming
Shooting of Season 2 of Gen V started in May 2024 and concluded in October 2024. Production mostly went back to the same sites used in Season 1. The University of Toronto Mississauga remained the stand-in for Godolkin University for both outdoor and indoor scenes. The same Toronto area roads and outdoor locations were reused to have visual continuity.
Gen V Season 2 filming was accommodated due to current events, including the death of actor Chance Perdomo. In spite of adaptations, the show managed to get through filming on time, continuing to use Toronto and its vicinity as its hub.
