Elsbeth Season 3 premiered on October 12, 2025, and brought back the unconventional Elsbeth Tascioni, played by Carrie Preston, in solving more cases with her astute observational skills. However, not all the beloved characters appeared in the premiere episode of the reverse whodunnit series.
One of those characters is NYPD Officer Kaya Blanke, played by Carra Patterson. The fan-favorite character, now promoted to an undercover detective, did not appear in the episode. However, her absence was explained in a scene between Elsbeth Cameron, where the latter secretly informs Elsbeth that their friend was on an undercover mission, and was happy with her new position.
While Patterson did not appear in Episode 1, she will be seen in Episode 3 of Elsbeth Season 3, as a guest star.

Elsbeth Season 3: Detective Kaya Blanke is revealed to be on an undercover mission in Episode 1
In the premiere episode of Elsbeth Season 3, the quirky protagonist is tasked to solve the murder of Scotty Bristol, the host of a late-night show, with a new officer, Grace Hackett, who is also a stand-up comedian. Apart from solving a brand new case and helping the police to catch the killer, the episode also revealed what our beloved characters have been up to.
While Elsbeth was jet-lagged after travelling from Scotland, the episode also revealed her close friend, Kaya Blanke's, whereabouts. In May 2025, Deadline reported that Patterson, who portrays Kaya, will appear as a guest star in Season 3 of the police procedural comedy series rather than appear as a series regular.
However, her absence was not ignored but explained in the premiere episode. It was revealed that Kaya was now promoted to being an undercover agent and joined a special task force in D.C. In the episode, Elsbeth asks Cameron what Kaya was up to. While he says he cannot reveal anything, he tells the former about Kaya completing her training and going on her first undercover mission. In the episode, he says:
"I’m not supposed to say anything. I have spoken to her and she completed training, and has begun her first undercover assignment. And she sounds pretty damn happy about it."
While fans missed the irresistible camaraderie between Kaya and Elsbeth in the premiere episode, they do not have to wait long as she is set to appear in the upcoming episodes of Elsbeth Season 3.
Elsbeth Season 3: Patterson will appear in Episode 3
Deadline also revealed that Carra Patterson will appear as Kaya in Episode 3, titled Good Grief, of Elsbeth Season 3. It is revealed that the duo will cross paths while their cases intersect, and will end up having a hushed conversation as Kaya is currently undercover. Furthermore, it is also said that the finale of Episode 3 will reveal more about Kaya's storyline ahead in Season 3 and might also give us more hints about when we will see her next.
About her character in Season 3, Patterson shared some details with Deadline in May 2025 and stated:
"My character, Kaya Blanke, is embarking on a new adventure as the story continues to unfold, and I am excited to do the same."
Other than Preston, Elsbeth Season 3 also stars Wendell Pierce, Gloria Reuben, Molly Price, and Micaela Diamond, among others.
