Land of Sin dropped on Netflix on January 2, 2026. All five Episodes of the Swedish crime thriller were released in one go.

Originally titled Synden, this Nordic noir was created by Peter Grönlund. The series follows Detective Dani (Krista Kosonen) as she teams up with Malik (Mohammed Nour Oklah), her fresh-out-of-the-academy partner. They are investigating the death of a teenager named Silas at a lonely farmhouse on Sweden’s Bjäre peninsula.

What starts as a simple case quickly spirals. They get knee-deep in old family grudges, bitter arguments between fathers and sons, and wounds that never healed in this tight-knit rural community. The deeper Dani digs, the more tangled things get, and it turns out she is not just an outsider looking in. The case hits close to home. Meanwhile, Elis, the victim’s uncle, gives Dani and Malik just one week to figure it out, or he will settle the score himself.

The filming sites of Land of Sin are very instrumental in creating the brooding ambience in the series. The entire production was done in Skåne County, the southernmost of the Swedish Counties. The movie crew used an on-location method where it used the real landscape and buildings of Sweden to form a realistic setting for this psychological thriller.

Filming started around March 18, 2024, but was briefly halted after actor Peter Gantman was severely injured by a dog. This took about four months, and filming eventually concluded in late October 2024.

Below is the list of places where Land of Sin was reportedly shot:

Skåne County: The production heart

Land of Sin was shot in Skåne County, the southernmost county of Sweden, which is geographically varied with both rolling landscape and vast stretches of beaches. This area was known as Scania to English people. It gave the production a very versatile canvas, which enabled transition between the farmlands, remote wetlands, and coastal landscapes. The natural landmarks of the county, such as green farm land, small houses, and lonely highways, were visual accents in every episode of the series.

The selection of Skåne County was not at all random. Moviedelic states that the area is a glorious filming location whose scenery has been used as a backdrop in movies including Ingmar Bergman’s classic The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries, and recent hits like The Bridge and Lilya 4-Ever.

Malmö: Urban contrast and city life

Malmö gave the city backgrounds for Land of Sin. The crew spent a few days in this coastal city and the nearby area. Malmö, the third-largest city in Sweden, was a stark contrast to the claustrophobic rural environments, which symbolize the outer world where detectives Dani and Malik were born. In the official episode description by Netflix, the characters are referred to as “Malmö detectives,” which makes the metropolis their work base, home, and sends them to the so-called problematic countryside.

The filming took place in different places across Malmö, with the shots around Martins Konditori & Kafé, a bakery and cafe which is situated at Södra Förstadsgatan 88. Local diners, kiosks, and other businesses across the city were probably captured in camera. It made detectives look more realistic by giving them a metropolitan origin before they descended into the shadows.

Skurup Municipality: Foggy farmlands and wetland sequences

Skurup, a municipality in Scania, was a significant filming site where Land of Sin was filmed in foggy conditions that helped add a vibe to the show. The crew dedicated itself to authenticity by shooting in the most difficult circumstances, such as wetland scenes where actors and crew members got to be knee-deep in water. In order to shoot such challenging scenes, specially designed body suits were created, which showed the efforts of the production team to recreate real-life settings rather than using the constrained studio settings.

Agricultural landscapes of the area of Skurup, with its deserted farmhouses, working farms, and lonely country roads, were a perfect illustration of the economic stagnation and social isolation characterizing the setting of Land of Sin. These places allowed the show to explore what Martin Cid Magazine termed the “people at the edge,” which are individuals who live on the fringes of the otherwise well-off Swedish society.

Other locations in Skåne

In addition to the natural landscape, Land of Sin used numerous industrial and interior spaces in the Skåne County to make up a complete visual world. As Moviedelic reports, the crew set up production that seems to be an indoor gas station, which was renovated to suit the needs of a certain sequence. Also, there were scenes shot in proximity to a great carpentry store, and the surrounding fittings contributed to the rustic feel of the show, presenting a working-class ambiance.

The interior settings were also essential in the aesthetics of the series. In an analysis of Land of Sin, according to Martin Cid Magazine, the farmhouses not only defy the traditional Scandinavian design aesthetic, but also feature messy kitchens, low-light corridors, and areas that are characterized by economic depression and time. These were not the curated showrooms commonly found in exported Scandinavian drama but real working homes that had been battered with wear and neglect, basing the high melodrama of the narrative on the art of touch.

Lilla Torg Area: The old town of Malmö

Land of Sin was extensively shot in Lille Torg, the cobblestoned city centre of Malmö, capturing most of the recognisable landmarks of the area. Another one of the most picturesque places in Malmö is Lilla Torg, which literally translates to “Little Square.” It has traditional architecture and a bustling ambience that is a stark contrast to the desolate countryside landscapes. This 16th-century historic square offered to the series of urban visual uniqueness that would underline the cultural and psychological gap between the city and the country.

The historical nature of the Lilla Torg district facilitated Land of Sin to make Malmö look like a relative civilization and order, a stark contrast to the world of lawlessness and patriarchy that the detectives deal with in the country investigation. This physical contrast enables one of the main themes in the series: the deterioration of the social contracts and institutional order in the remote localities.

Gothenburg: Potential additional locations

Although in-depth sources often rely on Skåne County as the main filming location, Gothenburg, Sweden's second-largest city, has also been referenced in relation to Swedish movie production in general. Gothenburg is located on the west coast of Sweden and has evolved into one of the major production centers in the country. It is commonly known as Trollywood due to the presence of Film i Väst and the massive production studios within the Trollhättan region.

Tonboriday reported that Land of Sin filmed several scenes around Eriksberg, but the real highlight was the East Indiaman Götheborg. That ship shows up in the shipboard scenes and brings a whole layer of history with it.

Although Land of Sin does not appear to have detailed scenes shot in Gothenburg in the available sources, a wide array of filming locations, such as the historic Haga area with its old wooden buildings, various museums, and the contemporary Lindholmen Science Park, make the city a comprehensive venue for Swedish shooting.

All five episodes of Land of Sin are now streaming on Netflix.
