BritBox's latest detective series, Lynley, starring Leo Suter and Sofia Barclays, is all set to drop on September 4, 2025.
Directed by ED Bazalgette, this series is based on Elizabeth George's popular novel series 'Inspector Lynley'. It is written by Steve Thompson, who is well known for his works, Vienna, Jericho, Prime Target, Deep State, Doctor Who, and Sherlock.
At the centre is an unlikely pairing, police detective Thomas Lynley and sergeant Barbara Havers, who find themselves drawn together by circumstances and crime. What makes them a compelling duo is not the cases they crack but the clash of worlds they come from. Lynley comes from an aristocratic background, while Barbara's values are rooted in the working class.
Expect conflicts in opinions and even heated disagreements. But one thing is sure: this unlikely duo has potential, and each investigation will not only test their professional skills but also their ability to trust each other.
Most British crime/detective dramas take advantage of the misty and gloomy weather conditions of U.K and Ireland, which adds to the eeriness and builds suspense. Similarly, Lynley was mostly filmed in Ireland and some parts of England. The filming began in Dublin, Ireland, in August 2024 and wrapped up by early December.
In an interview with PrecinctTV, the actors revealed how the series is set in East Anglia, with some bits of Cambridge and London, but it was actually filmed in Dublin, Ireland. Suter added,
"We actually filmed it in Dublin and the environs, beyond the pale, in the Wicklow Mountains, which are stunning and beautiful. So, I really enjoyed that, and Ireland was such a wonderful place to film. We did get some footage of the countryside, but we were not there."

Lynley filming locations: Revisiting the key locations of BritBox's detective drama
Ireland - Dublin, Wicklow Mountains, Mallow Castle, and others
Most of the scenes of the upcoming detective series, Lynley, were shot in Ireland. Filming began in Dublin, which provides a perfect backdrop for such a series. It's a dream setting with dark lanes, grand architecture, which adds to the constant tension and suspense. From the Dublin Castle to the St. Patrick's and Christ Church cathedrals, to the cobbled streets of Temple Bar and the lush greens of Phoenix Park- Dublin has it all.
Located less than 50 km from Dublin, the Wicklow Mountains provide a spectacular landscape. From Ireland's largest national park to the 6th-century monastic Glendalough to winding roads and deep blue lakes, the Wicklow Mountains provide a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. It serves as a perfect filming location.
Another prime location where Lynley was filmed is Mallow Castle, which is located in County Cork in Ireland, overlooking the River Blackwater. County Cork is a popular filming location for several projects, including The Body is Water, The Young Offenders, and The Eclipse. It provides a diverse landscape. It has beautiful coastal towns and villages, along with the popular Beara Peninsula, and the English Market.
Mallow Castle originally dates back to 1185; however, the fortified house was built in the 16th century by Sir Thomas Norreys. Now in ruins, the fortified house is surrounded by almost 33 acres of land. So if you are a heritage enthusiast or someone who loves nature, add Mallow Castle to your Ireland itinerary.
How to visit? Mallow Castle allows visitors; the ground is accessible, but the castle is closed for renovation. It remains open from 9 AM to 5 PM.
England: Norfolk Broads
Apart from Ireland, Lynley was also shot in some parts of England, especially the Norfolk Broads. Often referred to as the Broadlands, this site is well known for the network of rivers and lakes. It is also Britain's largest protected wetland and the largest inland waterway. There's also the Board's National Park, which offers stunning views and is home to some rare species of plants and animals in the world. You can enjoy boating, birdwatching, or simply walking through the trails. Thus, this location provides an ideal backdrop for gripping detective series.
