Based on the webtoon Plaza Wars: Mercy for None, Netflix’s latest offering in its K-drama section is the six-part acting thriller Mercy for None. Following the revenge saga of Nam Gi-jun, who comes back after 11 years of leaving the life of organized crime to avenge the murder of his younger brother Gi-seok, Mercy for None is fast-paced, intense, and full of action.
Going down the path of revenge costs Nam Gi-jun almost everything as he has to fight against violent mob bosses and heads of criminal organizations. Moreover, he also has to face Gu Jun-mo, the young heir of one of the mob empires, who had a fight with Gi-seok, before the latter was stabbed to death in a parking lot after an attack organised by Jun-Mo.
Besides the performance of actors like So Ji-sub, Lee Jun-hyuk, Huh Joon-ho, etc., another element that adds to the appeal of Mercy for None is its shooting location. Shot entirely in South Korea, specifically in Seoul, the location helps to keep the narrative grounded and bring authenticity to the visuals.
Mercy for None filming locations
Seoul served as the main location for the filming of Mercy for None. Given the fact that Seoul serves as the main hub for the K-drama industry, choosing the location was a rather natural choice for the crew. The city boasts a number of highly equipped studios, some of which have been used for the indoor shots, as mentioned by Moviedelic.
Since a lot of the fighting sequences take place inside parking lots or other enclosed spaces, creating a controlled atmosphere was necessary to deliver those scenes. Moreover, the selection of these spaces also brought out the ruthless and matter of fact nature of the revenge drama.
It is in a parking lot that the murder of Gi-seok happens and thus the space becomes important throughout the show, with the dimly lit parking lots becoming a site for fights and ambushes. Given the realistic nature of these indoor spaces, it is quite evident that they have been shot at some of the best studios in Seoul.
While talking about the cast and crew and the filming locations, series director Choi mentioned to allkpop that “having such talented ‘ingredients’ allowed [him] great creative freedom in making the show.”
Besides the perfect indoor spaces for the fighting sequences, Seoul as a city also added to the visual beauty of the show. With landmarks like Deoksugung Palace, Gwanghwamun, Olympic Park, Lotte World, Seongsan Bridge, etc., Seoul has also served as the base for shows like XO, Kitty, Kingdom, Squid Game, etc.
Mercy for None can be streamed on Netflix.
