Where was Murderbot shot? Filming locations of the new Alexander Skarsgård starrer on Apple TV+, explored

Murderbot, the latest sci-fi thriller on Apple TV+, premiered on May 16, 2025, with its first two episodes. The show is based on the book series The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells, and its official synopsis on Rotten Tomatoes reads,

“In a high-tech future, a rogue security robot secretly gains free will; to stay hidden, it reluctantly joins a new mission protecting scientists on a dangerous planet even though it just wants to binge soap operas.”

Shot mainly in Vancouver, Toronto, and Elora, Murderbot chronicles the story of a cyborg who calls himself Murderbot and operates on free will by hacking its own system. The shooting locations have been chosen keeping in mind the theme and tone of the show, to work in favor of the story.

Murderbot filming locations

Toronto, Ontario

As reported by Moviedelic, Toronto has been used for both indoor and outdoor sequences in Murderbot. The city is full of modern architectural beauties and sound stages, which helped in recreating the sci-fi scenes that feature other planets inhabited by aliens.

However, the usage of green screen goes without saying, as it helped to extend the background and achieve symmetry during post production.

Some scenes were also shot in New York and that helped to keep the backdrop real.

Elora, Ontario

Some outdoor scenes of Murderbot were filmed in Elora. To be precise, Centre Wellington township in Wellington County was used for specific scenes. The Elora Quarry Conservation Area also features in the show and, given the kind of natural beauty that the location boasts, it not only makes the viewing experience aesthetically pleasing but also adds depth to the story.

The famous limestone quarry, which is surrounded by cliffs that go up to 40 feet, can also be spotted in the series along with glimpses of the Elora Gorge. Fans would already know that the Grand River flows through it, and the location thus adds to the exciting tone of the show.

Vancouver, British Columbia

Vancouver was another shooting location for the show, as the place offers a lot of modern urban locales and state-of-the-art buildings apt to set up the alien world that the show deals with. The sleek aesthetic of the city adds to the visual beauty of Murderbot and while the location of the city seems familiar, it adds that touch of extreme modernity that is a signature of outer worlds.

Murderbot can be streamed on Apple TV+ with new episodes dropping weekly every Friday.
