Paul Abbott's 2004 British comedy drama series Shameless is one of the most iconic British shows on television, which even inspired Turkish, Russian, and an American adaptation on Showtime.

Highly appreciated and praised in the British media (like The Sun and BBC Two), the show chronicled the life of the Gallagher family on the fictional Chatsworth council estate in Manchester. The series followed the ups and downs of the Gallagher siblings with their estranged and alcoholic father, Frank Gallagher.

Shameless starred David Threlfall, Gerard Kearns, Elliott Tittensor, Annabelle Apsion, Tina Malone, Sean Gilder and many other talented actors.

The iconic British comedy series was primarily shot in Manchester.

More on this in our story.

Exploring major filming locations from Shameless, the British comedy drama series

1) Wythenshawe, Manchester

The fictional Chatsworth Estate is at the heart of Shameless, a sprawling council estate in Manchester that is home to the Gallagher family and their many adventures.

Filming for this primary location was in the Wythenshawe area of Manchester, which is characterized by its graffiti-covered walls and a sense of community.

From the local pub to the bustling neighbourhood, the Wythenshawe area provided a perfect backdrop for the Gallagher family.

The Gallagher house is not a real location, but was built on the Roundthorn Industrial Estate in South Manchester, around Wythenshawe. While the exterior shots of the Gallagher home were shot in West Gorton in East Manchester from Seasons 1-4, it was later moved to a set built on Roundthorn Industrial Estate in Shameless Season 5.

In addition to the Chatsworth Estate, the set for Chatsworth Market was also built in the Wythenshawe area. An important part of the show, you will find everything in this bustling market, from stolen goods to counterfeit merchandise. A place for the inhabitants to socialize and make money, the scenes for the market were shot in this area with makeshift stalls.

2) The Railway Hotel, Kearsley, Greater Manchester (The Jockey Pub)

Every fan of Shamelss loves The Jockey pub, which captures the true essence of a British pub. The place where the Gallagher family went to unwind and forget their sorrows was filmed at The Railway Hotel in Kearsley, Greater Manchester.

The location became an excellent spot to set up a traditional British pub, with dim lighting, worn-out furniture and a friendly atmosphere. The location, which has witnessed many heartfelt conversations between friends, is an important part of the show.

3) Salford, Greater Manchester (The Maguire family home)

While the Chatsworth Estate is the heart of Shameless, the Maguire family home is an equally iconic location, which gives a dark and gritty edge to the show. Led by patriarch Paddy, the Maguire family home was filmed in the Ordsall area of Salford, Greater Manchester.

From drug deals to ugly family disputes, the Maguire house was in stark contrast to the Gallagher house, but a welcome addition to Shameless, providing much balance in the show.

4) Manchester City Centre

An exploration of Urban British life is incomplete without Manchester City Centre and Shameless used many iconic locations from here to highlight the city's cultural diversity and dynamic energy.

Iconic and historic locations like Piccadilly Gardens, Canal Street, and the Northern Quarter make their due appearance in the show, adding a colourful and cheerful character.
