Filming for the show began in June 2024 in various locations across London and the Málaga province in Spain. There were also shoots in Ronda and Marbella, with London serving as the primary base for the show.

One of the places in London where the show was filmed is St. Ermin’s Hotel in Westminster. The hotel is a historic luxury property and is part of Marriott International’s Autograph Collection. The building is known for its Baroque and Rococo work on ceilings. Another location is 59 Marlborough Place in St. John’s Wood, London. It is a semi-detached house listed as a villa. St. John’s Wood is known for its tree-lined streets and posh homes.

The Girlfriend also features Cortijo San Francisco in Málaga, Spain. The luxurious resort, which is also a wedding venue, is located near Estepona on the Costa del Sol. It sits in a semi-tropical environment and was built in 1973 for actor Stewart Granger by architect Manuel Camisuli Andaluz.

The show also showcases Cueva del Gato in Andalusia, Spain. The natural monument is located in Benaoján, Ronda, in the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. It is known as Cat’s Cave because the entrance of the cave resembles a cat’s face. Additionally, the Málaga Port was used as an airport in the series. Some shooting also took place in Marbella, a coastal city in Málaga, known for its beautiful architecture.

In an interview with The Guardian, Robin Wright states that the show is a “triangular love story” and that Laura and Cherry might have been best friends in another period, as they are similar. On the other hand, Cooke states in the interview that this is not a “mother-son thing,” as even her mother did not like her boyfriends much.

In the same interview, the two also talk about how their physical appearance and sensuality were a big part of the series. Cooke mentions that she feels “more comfortable” now that she has gotten older. Wright states about Cooke that “she’s an animal…she’s great.” Cooke adds that she admires Wright as she “invented event television” with her appearance on Netflix’s House of Cards.

Finally, Cooke states that she wants to direct herself and praises Robin, who did it with a lot of “grace and effortlessness.”
