The Dexter franchise still holds its ground with viewers who enjoy dark, anti-hero crime stories. The original series, which aired from 2006 to 2013 and has built a loyal fan base who could not get enough of Michael C. Hall as the lead.

Years later, fans made enough noise for the story to return. The creators brought Dexter back as a 10-episode limited series in 2021. That revival showed there was still a strong interest in his world.

The franchise didn’t stop there. In 2024, Dexter: Original Sin arrived as a prequel. This time, the focus shifted to the character's early years. Patrick Gibson stepped in to play a younger version of the character, showing how the habits, rules, and mindset began to form. It added context rather than shock, which longtime fans appreciated.

Then came 2025 and the story moved forward again with Dexter: Resurrection, a direct sequel to the limited series. Instead of rebooting or repeating old beats, the franchise chose to push ahead. That decision confirmed one thing. His story still has weight, and the audience is still willing to follow it.

So why should you watch the show?

The plot: What makes the series so interesting?

Dexter Morgan is a professional cop who solves crimes and hunts down the bad guys, but he is a serial killer.

He believes that he was born with an urge to kill and calls it “Dark Passenger.” To cope with it he came up with The Code of Harry. The code allows him to kill only people who are murderers and not anyone else and his adoptive father guides him through it. But he is just a part of his imagination since he died long ago.

About the protagonist: What's so conflicting about the character?

The character struggles to understand basic emotions but studies people closely to fit in as a 'regular guy'.

Michael C. Hall shows the character as too calm and he even struggles to understand basic emotions, but studies people closely to blend in. He dates, works, jokes, and socializes, even when none of it feels natural to him. This means he is always behind a mask, like several other serial killers in history.

But his inner monologue gives viewers direct access to his thoughts. The character kind of made an impact on the audience's mind to the extent that, for a moment, the colors of morality get blurred. People start admiring him.

Other characters in the show

Jennifer Carpenter plays Debra Morgan, the lead's sister and emotional opposite.

Rita Bennett, his girlfriend and later wife, gives him a safe version of normal life. Other characters in the Miami Metro Police Department, like Angel Batista, Vince Masuka, and James Doakes, drive the narrative.

If you are invested enough already, this is your sign to start watching the series to catch up with the anti-hero's lore. So, is he really a treacherous killer? Or does he silently deliver justice? But even for the latter, many argue that there are other ways to serve justice beyond killing people.
