Two-time Oscar winner and seven-time Emmy winner Tom Hanks is one of the greatest actors in Hollywood.

The actor has an impressive decades-spanning career and has starred in multiple projects, including The Da Vinci Code, From the Earth to the Moon, Band of Brothers, Game Change, Forrest Gump, and many more.

In a 2024 interview, the actor called HBO's 2019 historical miniseries Chernobyl his greatest watch yet. The miniseries is created by Craig Mazin and is based on the true events around the Chernobyl nuclear plant, which caused a disaster in the town of Pripyat in 1986.

The series is based on Belarusian Nobel laureate Svetlana Alexievich's book Voices from Chernobyl, which documents the real and harrowing accounts of Pripyat locals.

More on Tom Hanks' greatest watch in our story.

HBO's drama series Chernobyl is the greatest watch yet for actor Tom Hanks

In an interview with The New Indian Express, Tom Hanks named the HBO historical miniseries as his greatest watch:

“Streaming works great for some things and it’s perhaps a handicap for others. One of the greatest things I have watched in the last few years was the five-part HBO series, Chernobyl. It was fantastic.”

With the world and cinema shifting to streaming, actor Tom Hanks is also navigating the streaming waters and believes some things are better when adapted for streaming.

In recent years, the actor has also starred in various streaming projects, including Greyhound and Finch on Apple TV, and A Man Called Otto on Netflix. Since Tom Hanks named Chernobyl as the greatest watch, it is evident that the actor also believes that harrowing subjects, such as natural disasters, work best on streaming.

The 2019 HBO miniseries follows the true events that occurred in April 1986 around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Pripyat (which is now considered Ukraine).

The five-part series captures the horrors and the initial hours before the disaster, which took the lives of many workers and first responders. Episode 1 begins with the initiation of the disaster, when a meltdown occurred during a routine test, and what follows is one of the most harrowing tragedies in human history.

While two engineers were initially killed, Chernobyl was hailed as a great watch because it shed light on the lesser-known stories of the miners and first responders who were the actual heroes in the face of the tragedy. The touching story of firefighter Vasily Ignatenko and his wife stays with you long after the show is over.

Tom Hanks correctly hailed it as his greatest watch, as Chernobyl feels like seeing your worst nightmare unfold. From the tragedy to the political consequences behind it, the show captures the horrors of the Pripyat population, who were not even immediately evacuated following the disaster.

In addition to the lives affected and lost, the show also explores the cause of the disaster and whether it could have been avoided.

According to a 2005 World Health Organization study, an estimated 4000 deaths are likely linked to the Chernobyl disaster, because of the long-term radiation effects that turned into deadly diseases and cancer over the years.
