While fantasy book lovers were left shocked after The Wheel of Time's cancellation after Season 3, they can try this Netflix adaptation, which also won over Brandon Sanderson.
The high fantasy and science fiction author is most famously known for his Cosmere fictional universe, which includes book series like Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive.
However, Sanderson is also largely credited for completing Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time book series after the author's demise.
Recently, Prime Video shocked everyone with the news of the series' cancellation and fantasy lovers want more. While Sanderson had mixed reviews about Jordan's series adaptation, he recently praised Netflix's One Piece, which might be the perfect cure for disappointed fans.
Netflix's One Piece is the live-action adaptation of the beloved and ongoing manga series of the same name, which was also developed into a 1999 anime series and is a goldmine for all anime lovers.
More on this in our story.
The Wheel of Time's Brandon Sanderson praised One Piece for being a faithful adaptation
While Brandon Sanderson's comments regarding The Wheel of Time series and his (negligible) involvement in the adaptation stirred controversy among the fans of the books, the author has revealed his favorite adaptation.
In his Intentionally Blank podcast, Jordan's co-author revealed how he is a harsher critic for the Prime Video series because of his relationship with the original work and to protect the authenticity of Jordan's works.
While Sanderson has implicitly expressed his disappointment with The Wheel of Time series, he praised Netflix's adaptation of a famous fantasy manga series, One Piece.
He even went on to compare the two shows and concluded how One Piece is the more faithful adaptation of the original work:
"[One Piece is a] better adaptation of the soul of the creator’s work than Wheel of Time is...''
It is no secret that Sanderson was disappointed with his negligible involvement in the Prime Video adaptation, the consequences of which were also felt by book lovers.
While The Wheel of Time was eventually getting more aligned with Jordan's books in Season 3, it was simply too late and the show got cancelled.
However, Sanderson praised One Piece as a faithful adaptation, which is specially created for anime lovers. He also said how Netflix's fantasy show is a more self-contained work and will likely reach the same heights as the anime and manga series.
What has Brandon Sanderson said about The Wheel of Time adaptation?
While Brandon Sanderson was all praise for the One Piece adaptation, his views were slightly different for The Wheel of Time series.
In an interview on The Dusty Wheel Show, Sanderson discussed the Season 2 finale and expressed his honest views about the future of the show:
"I want to love it, and I like it. I think people are gonna enjoy watching this, I don’t think they’ll come back for it. Cause what brings you back are those moments where things culminate. You don’t come back for cool scenes."
While The Wheel of Time's future looked bright at the time, Sanderson rightly predicted the fate of the series, which was cancelled after Season 3. Since the Prime Video series failed to capture the book lovers' interest, it became even more difficult to interest a new audience.
The show's direction took it further away from Jordan's source material and by the time the makers realised this, it was simply too late.
Sanderson also addressed the show's cancellation on his podcast:
"I won't miss being largely ignored; they wanted my name on it for legitimacy, but not to involve me in any meaningful way.''
While Jordan's fantasy adaptation has its fate set in stone, Netflix is just starting on the One Piece adaptation and Season 2 will premiere in 2026.
