Adnan Salif made an initial appearance in Scandal Season 3. At first, she appears to be just one of Harrison Wright's shadows from his past. However, as we continue to learn through her narrative, we find that she is far more than an enemy.

Adnan, played by actress Nazanin Boniadi, catches everyone (both characters in the series and viewers) by surprise when it is revealed that she is a female. Many had assumed Adnan would be male, based on earlier hints.

Turns out, Adnan is formidable in the international crime arena. Her background is inextricably linked to Harrison Wright, an employee of Olivia Pope. Years ago, both Harrison and Adnan were arrested for insider trading. That case concluded with Adnan being deported and Harrison receiving a brief prison sentence due to Olivia's intervention.

When Adnan returns to the U.S. again, assisted by the manipulative Cyrus Beene, Harrison is fearful for his life. Past secrets reemerge, and he believes his life to be in danger. However, Adnan's mission is not mere revenge. She has something bigger in mind.

Her story gets more sensational as she becomes involved with Maya Lewis, also referred to as "Mama Pope," who happens to be a feared terrorist. The two hatch schemes of bombings which have the potential to shake up politics in the entire country. Their relationship does not find root in trust and fidelity. It's one of convenience: two dangerous women utilizing each other's skills for personal gain.

Adnan isn't depicted as being merely evil. Actress Nazanin Boniadi talked about her character in an interview for NPR, pointing out that one of the strengths of the character is making audiences think:

“Is she a bad guy, or is she just completely lost, is she just damaged goods?”

It's this gray morality, typical in Shonda Rhimes’ writing, that makes Adnan an important part of Scandal’s overarching themes of power, devotion, and survival.

Adnan's own story ends explosively, as she's destroyed and betrayed by those she works for, but, being in the show for only a handful of months, her role has lingering impacts. She's central to Harrison's own tragic trajectory and to the show's whole chronology of trust and betrayal.

What is Scandal about?

Scandal, created by Shonda Rhimes, is an action-filled political drama series. It combined weekly dilemmas and ongoing story arcs, which last throughout the entire series.

The lead role is played by Kerry Washington as Olivia Pope. She is a top crisis manager who has an eventful past life. Olivia has a strong sense of right and wrong, but she doesn't always do what she's legally supposed to do. Her agency, Olivia Pope & Associates (which would be QPA in later seasons), resolves crises for influential figures in Washington, D.C.: politicians, movie and TV stars, business executives, and ambassadors.

As the series progresses, Scandal goes darker and deeper into the secrets of politics. It exposes shadow government agencies, political assassinations, rigged elections, and deadly secrets that destroy lives. The series even made headlines for being bold on privilege, power, and just how far people will go to protect themselves once they're close to power.

Characters like Adnan Salif remind us of one of the series' central ideas: in Scandal, there aren't any completely good people or completely bad people. We all keep secrets; every friendship or transaction comes with danger, and every "fix" comes with an attached price tag.

Shonda Rhimes' formula of intense romance, political intrigue, and rapid-fire drama set this series apart from other shows of the same genre. It also innovatively included Black women in central roles and embodied strong, multi-faceted women who did not fit tidy models of good and evil.
