Chief of War, featuring Jason Momoa, is an intriguing TV show that is steeped in history, showcasing the intense fights that took place in the Hawaiian islands from 1782 to 1810. Right after its release on 1st August, it has become a sensation among fans.
The rich culture and history that is shown through the Chief of War is a standard of its own. If you have watched this series, the Ka’iana character must have definitely drawn you in.
Jason Momoa plays the lead role of Kaʻiana, and this story divulges his struggles during the unification of Hawaii. Kaʻiana is not just a rebel; through the series, we also see him as the first Hawaiian prince to travel to Europe and East Asia.
Who is related to Kaʻiana in Chief of War?
Through the two episodes of Chief of War, much about the people he is close to is explored. The first accomplice who is also significant in the battles is Kaʻiana’s wife, Kupuohi, whose significance in his life is immense.
She is a valiant woman and has the ability to fight alongside her husband. She has the ability to take on strong opponents with ease, with her fighting skills. One of her significant achievements is leading an all-women's regiment.
Nāmākēhā and Nahi are half-brothers of Kaʻiana. Each of them is dedicated to supporting Kaʻiana. However, things get complicated for Nāmākēhā as he begins to have feelings for Kaʻiana’s wife.

Keōua might be Kaʻiana’s cousin, but his relationship with Kaʻiana is far from that of an accomplice. He is the main antagonist of the series. His ideals are quite different than those of Kaʻiana. He often creates hindrances in his path for his own gain.
Yet another significant blood lineage of Kaʻiana is Kamehameha. He is believed to be Keōua’s son, hence this makes Kamehameha Kaʻiana’s first cousin. Chief of War reflects much of real history.
The authenticity of the show leaves a lasting impact on the viewers. The Hawaiian warrior was born in 1755. His physical prowess was ahead of others. Initially, he was supportive of Kamehameha’s ideals.
However, he was denied a strong position due to political diplomacy, which led him to rebel. Chief of War masterfully captures the true essence and significance of this crucial part of Polynesian history.

Though Kamehameha is a crucial part of history, telling Kaʻiana’s story was also significant. Chief of War tells Kaʻiana’s story and depicts the numerous dangerous situations he had to go through to become who he was. Kaʻiana’s life is a tapestry of relationships.
The loyalties, connections, and choices ultimately defined his path. He is a man caught between his bloodline. This TV show holds up the forgotten hero’s story to the viewers. In an interview with Town & Country, Jason Momoa spoke about his character, Kaʻiana, saying he was:
“one of the first famous Hawaiians. He would travel the world, and you got to see that. I just thought that was a really beautiful story.”
The series is available for streaming on Apple TV+. Much of the series is yet to be released.
