HBO Max's romantic comedy anthology series Love Life, Season 1, starring Anna Kendrick and Peter Vack, dropped in May 2020. Unfortunately, just after two seasons, the show was canceled. While the first season was based on the life of Anna Kendrick's character Darby Carter, the second focused on William Jackson's Marcus Watkins. Love Life Season 1 gives us a sneak peek into what dating in 2010s New York looked like.
Romance on TV has a way of keeping audiences guessing, and Love Life Season 1 was no exception. Anna Kendrick's Darby Carter took viewers through a winding journey of heartbreak, growth, and self-discovery. But the real question fans kept asking was: 'Who does Darby finally choose?' The answer isn't just about the man in her life. It is also about the woman she grows to be.
After a whirlwind of failed romances, heartbreaks, and a relentless search for the true soulmate in the Love Life Season 1, Darby Carter finally chose Grant (Kingsley Ben-Adir). Darby met Grant at Sara's wedding, and they hit it off instantly. The spark, honesty, and mutual respect that Darby's previous relationship lacked were all fulfilled. However, they didn't connect immediately; instead, weeks later, they bumped into each other in a supermarket, as the narrator revealed that Darby had finally found "her person."

Love Life Season 1: Darby's decade of romantic detours
Darby's romantic journey starts with Augie Jeong (Jin Ha), a quick-witted journalist whom she met in a karaoke room. Even though their romance was bright and hopeful, Auggie's career opportunities took him overseas, causing their breakup. They tried to reconnect later, but failed. When Darby became pregnant with his child, they decided to co-parent their son, Theo, together.
From there, her love life became a carousel of mismatches. She then briefly dates her former boss, Bradley, who is also recently divorced. Then there is Magnus Lund, the charming chef, yet an unreliable flame, whom she ends up marrying and later divorcing. Their connection was toxic, and they weren't compatible as a couple.
For a brief period, she reconnects with her school crush, Luke, and also ends up in a one-night stand with Danny Two Phones. Similarly, Darby also faces difficulties in her friendship-most notably with Sara, whose struggles mirror Darby's search for stability.
Darby Carter ends up with Grant in Love Life Season 1: Why it matters?
Post-divorce, Darby takes a step back from dating and focuses on her family and career. In short, she stops frantically looking for a soulmate. However, as the wise say, love shows up when you least expect it. Darby finally finds her person by the end of Love Life Season 1.
In the finale, Darby ends up choosing Grant, whom she met during Sara's wedding. Their connection feels lively from the start; no whirlwind drama or frantic chase. Carter's journey in navigating through romance and heartbreak is messy, funny, and quite relatable.
