Davina was born in the French Quarter Coven, her fate sealed to become a member of the group of Harvest girls. What was supposed to be a deadly ritual led to obtaining supernatural powers, facing brutal fights, and becoming a central figure in the magic politics of New Orleans.
Her plot is full of dramatic changes, as she starts as a scared girl who does not know how to control herself and magic, but ends up becoming the Regent of the Nine Covens, yielding ancestral powers that control not only witches but vampires, too.
Her character arc helps not only to identify the main plot lines but also shows the theme of power and sacrifice in The Originals. Her story reveals the paranormal structure of the show and the way in which it depicts witchcraft as part of its complex plot.
Who was Davina in The Originals?

The character of Davina Claire, played by Danielle Campbell, is presented in The Originals as a young, powerful witch who belongs to the French Quarter Coven in New Orleans. She was a Harvest girl, one of the few young witches who were sacrificed to pour their magic into the earth in a rite interrupted by Marcel Gerard, one of the vampire masters of the city. Due to the ritual not being fulfilled, Davina took on the energies of the other sacrificed witches, granting her vast yet initially uncontrollable magical powers.
In The Originals Season 1, Davina cannot cope with her excessive power, and is closely monitored and exploited politically by Marce, who wants to dominate witchcraft within the city. Beginning with a powerless position, Davina finally accepts her fate as a witch in her community. This fate includes the legacy of the Harvest ceremony, an important and hazardous magical ceremony that is key to the existence of the coven.
Davina meets her demise during this ritual, and this is a crucial point in her trajectory. But her death is made complicated by a spirit called Céleste who steals the ritual. Rather than Davina being resurrected alone, Céleste revives other witches as well, which creates an imbalance in the natural order of the magic and politics of the coven.
Following her resurrection, Davina is not only reinstated into the coven but also made much stronger. This resurrection serves as a birth and a crossing point, and she becomes a more powerful and influential character in the power struggles that take place in the witch society of New Orleans.
The Originals Season 2 introduces her as the Regent of the Nine Covens– the role that allows her to access all the ancestral knowledge and power held by the entire community of witches. The character of Davina is the main cause of most conflicts among the Mikaelson family, especially when she aims to end the sireline of Klaus Mikaelson to save the lives of people she cares about, such as Marcel and Josh.
Her story is further developed by her love affair with Kol Mikaelson (who pretends to be Malik Westphall) and her final efforts to bring him back to life.
The third season reveals the more sinister side of her power journey as Davina chooses to remain in control, causes controversy in the Nine Covens, and loses her link to the Ancestors. She subsequently makes an alliance with the Strix coven, learning dark powers to unlink her friends from vampire sirelines and resurrect Kol at a huge personal cost.
Her betrayals end in her tragic death at the hands of Kol, who is cursed by the Ancestors seeking revenge. Nevertheless, traces of her soul still exist, enabling her influence to continue in the Ancestral Plane and subsequent events.
In The Originals Season 4, Davina becomes the keeper of all the Ancestral Magic in New Orleans, which demonstrates the peak of her magic and powers. She is also instrumental in channeling the power to resurrect the French Quarter witches during their second Harvest ritual and fights the ever-increasing threat of the Hollow, a dark spirit who is associated with Kol and herself.
As Hope Mikaelson severs Davina’s link with the Hollow, she goes back to New Orleans with Kol and begins a new life, hence ending her significant storyline in the show.
