The Survivors on Netflix isn’t simply a haunting murder mystery, but also a deep exploration of the ways in which humans adapt to the grief of their loss. At the centre of The Survivors is a show that uses murder and death to shine a light into the deeper recesses of a town—i.e. Evelyn Bay in Tasmania, Australia.

Fifteen years ago, a tragedy befell the town in which two young men—Toby Gilroy and Finn Elliot—died after taking their boat out on a rescue mission during a storm. Apart from the deaths of these two, there was also the disappearance of a young girl by the name of Gabby Birch.

Here’s everything that you should know.

Bronte was murdered by Sean on The Survivors

The initial reason why Bronte came to Evelyn Bay on The Survivors was to investigate the disappearance of Gabby Birch and unearth her ultimate fate. It irked Bronte to realize that despite Birch disappearing on the same night as Gilroy and Elliot, the town would only lionize the two dead men and entirely forget about the girl. In her quest for the truth, Bronte visited the caves where Birch died. She discovered the rock where Birch had etched her name and took photographs as evidence.

However, Bronte unknowingly put herself in harm’s way by unearthing new evidence surrounding Birch’s death. It was finally revealed on The Survivors that Sean was the murderer all along and had himself taken Birch’s life. He had kept this secret for fifteen years and was in no mind to let Bronte call him out. Thereafter, Sean brutally murdered Bronte on the beach by hitting her repeatedly and dragging her body into the ocean. Although he escaped upon seeing Brian Elliott approaching him, the latter performed emergency CPR on Bronte but could not save her.

Showrunner opens up about The Survivor

Tony Ayres is the showrunner of The Survivors, and speaking in an interview with Tudum, he explained the show as a:

"Serious introspection into human processes and human emotions and feelings … The things that are really at its heart are things like a son wanting his mother's love, and the mother who just cannot afford to give it because her whole world might fall apart. The themes of grief and loss are something that I've danced around my entire career, I've always been interested in the way that people respond to loss because it seems to be one of the universal human conditions … That’s a central theme of the show, just trying to understand."

Ayres further added:

"In 2025, you cannot make a show about a young woman being murdered without trying to understand the context of that, the preconditions of that, the kind of society we live in, which valorizes male deaths, but ignores female deaths.”

The Survivors is exclusively available on Netflix.
