The Pogues lost one of their own in Netflix's Outer Banks Season 4, which featured the tragic death of JJ Maybanks (Rudy Pankow). While the gang managed to survive multiple antagonists, storms, and kidnappings throughout four seasons, JJ was shockingly killed in the Season 4 finale at the hands of his biological father, Chandler Groff.

Season 4 saw the Pogues setting off on a new adventure to find Blackbeard's long-lost Blue Crown, bringing them face-to-face with the ruthless antagonist of the season, Chandler Groff. While JJ learned the truth about his biological father in Season 3, little did he know that he would tragically die at his hands.

In the showdown of Season 4, Chandler fatally stabs JJ in the stomach, following which he dies in Kiara's arms and the Pogues declare revenge on Groff in Outer Banks' final season.

More on this in our story.

What led to JJ's shocking death in Outer Banks Season 4?

Outer Banks Season 4 introduced the most malevolent and ruthless antagonist in Pogues' history, Chandler Groff, who was JJ's biological father. What's more surprising is that Chandler was a Pogue on the Cut just like his son, who desperately wanted to climb the social ladder and transform into a kook.

To set his money-hungry plans in motion, he married Larissa Genrette (JJ's mother) to obtain the Genrette inheritance and later killed her and her father. What's worse is that he also abandoned an infant, JJ. However, destiny had other plans, as Larissa's father had not left his son-in-law anything, which led Chandler Groff to search for Blackbeard's crown and cross paths with his biological son once again.

In the Outer Banks Season 4 finale showdown, JJ and Kiara manage to get their hands on the crown, but Chandler Groff holds up a knife at Kiara's neck and demands that his son give away the treasure to him. Proving that he is the most loyal Pogue, JJ sacrifices the crown in the blink of an eye and saves his love, Kiara. In addition, he also taunts his father, saying that he will never have the true treasures of life, which are friendship and happiness.

However, even after JJ gives him the crown without any fight, he fatally stabs him in the stomach, proving why he is the worst character in Outer Banks history. His act of killing his son was purely out of spite and rage.

In an interview with Netflix Tudum, creator Josh Pate breaks down Chandler's antagonistic decision to kill his son even after getting his hands on the crown:

“He can compartmentalize and rationalize his actions to himself in a way that always makes himself justified in doing it. We were trying to make a truly malevolent character.”

JJ's death will set an intense revenge saga in Outer Banks Season 5

While Pankow's JJ will sadly not return in Outer Banks' fifth and final season, his death will loom largely in the narrative. The final moments of the Season 4 finale saw Kiara and Pogue resting JJ in Morocco, following which they learned that Chandler had fled to Portugal.

JJ's tragic death sets up an exciting revenge tale for the show's final season as the Pogues will retaliate with full force after losing one of their own. Teasing the intensity of their revenge, Pate added:

“They feel a duty to avenge JJ. If they don’t go after Groff, they’ll feel like they’ve let the spirit of JJ or their friendship down.”

Kiara announced revenge on Chandler after losing JJ in Season 4, and the gang will surely deliver justice for their friend and get back the treasure from Groff.
