Hellbound season 2 has been a rollercoaster ride, undoubtedly. The resurrections, the prophesies, and the New Truth cult, every aspect of this series, are filled with an intensity that leaves a lasting impact.
At the beginning of the series, in season 1, we see the sudden appearance of terrifying supernatural beings who begin to wreak havoc around the city. The people whom these creatures kill received the prophecy about their death.
This situation leads to the development of a cult called the New Truth. The ideologies of the New Truth society in Hellbound rise to prominence as the story progresses.
Who were the New Truth in Hellbound? Details explored
According to the founder of the New Truth society, Jung Jin-su, the reason behind the chaotic situation that the world is facing is due to the sins. He thinks that there is a divine will behind the decrees and demonstrations. This core belief is the backbone of the New Truth cult. His ideologies soon became popular amongst the people.
The core belief is that the people receiving the decree are sinners. Hence, they are now being punished by God. For the members of the New Truth, these executions are a sign of God making judgment. Their goal is to spread fear amongst the people, and they become extremely successful in doing so in Hellbound Season 1.
Even though there is no evidence proving the claims of the New Truth, the society has become a prominent structure in Hellbound. They gain more and more followers over time. Things quickly take a dark turn for the New Truth society. They begin to capitalize on the people's fear.

They use their fear to solidify their authority over them. The New Truth society does not create any hindrance in the path of the prophecies and the executions. Rather, they use it to their own advantage.
In Hellbound Season 2, we begin to see a different and darker side of the New Truth society. Soon, the New Truth became the controller of the people. Their influence grows immensely, and it takes a violent turn.
In an interview with The Korea Times in November 2021, creator and director Yeon Sang-ho said:
“In terms of genre, Hellbound is strictly a cosmic horror series. And the biggest characteristic of that genre is that it depicts human beings' weakness through unexplainable otherworldly beings or horror and by showing that comparison, we can explore human nature and our strengths, and if that mystery is explained, it wouldn't be of the cosmic horror genre. So in that sense, this series will stay in that genre even into further seasons.”
The New Truth society uses fear and begins to create a new social code. The people who defy them face ostracization. There is a distinct social commentary that can be understood through the workings of the New Truth Society in the series.

In an interview with Dispatch's Dipe, Yeon Sang-ho speaks about the meaning behind Hellbound:
“Jung Jin-soo embodies fear. He received a proclamation 20 years ago and has been gripped by terror, driven to use that fear to punish others and set the world right.”
The New Truth is not just a simple group but an organization that uses fear and power to manipulate people’s minds. They depict how blind faith can be dangerous. The New Truth’s control over society is a reflection of what happens when the line between religious belief and violent extremism is completely erased.
