Wayward, the mystery thriller miniseries, has just been released on Netflix, and it features a face you might recognise from multiple Netflix shows and a comedy special.

Canadian actor Mae Martin plays Alex Dempsey, a young police officer in the latest Netflix release. Before Wayward, Martin had given several memorable performances, one of which even earned them a BAFTA TV Award nomination.

In Wayward, Martin's character arrives at a small town, Tall Pines, Vermont, with his pregnant wife, Laura. Soon, he starts investigating the Tall Pines Academy with the help of Abbie and Leila, two students of the academy. Martin plays a crucial role in this show.

Who plays Alex in Wayward?

Mae Martin plays Alex in Wayward, a young police officer who has recently arrived at Tall Pines with his wife. Alex becomes crucial to the uncovering of the dark secrets of Tall Pines and Tall Pines Academy. He is the one adult Abbie and Leila can rely on, and he does his best to help them escape. Martin is also the creator, co-showrunner, and co-executive producer of the show.

Martin's career began as a stand-up comedian when they were just 13. Later, they went on to write and star in notable projects. Martin starred as an employee in Baroness von Sketch Show (2016-2019), which they also wrote. For the show, they won a Canadian Screen Award for Best Writing in a Variety or Sketch Comedy Series.

Martin is also known for playing Imogen in Uncle (2017). They wrote and performed in the episode Jon Richardson of the show Jon Richardson: Ultimate Worrier (2018) and featured in an episode of Comedians of the World (2019).

Martin then co-created the Channel 4/Netflix show Feel Good (2020-2021) with Joe Hampson, for which they earned a BAFTA nomination. In the series, they starred as a fictionalised version of themselves.

Mae Martin has been a contestant on Richard Osman's House of Games (2021) and LOL: Last One Laughing (2022). In 2022, Martin also played the role of Grace St. James in the HBO Max show The Flight Attendant. Martin was a contestant on Taskmaster Season 15 and won that season.

That same year, their comedy special Mae Martin: SAP was released on Netflix, for which they received a nomination for Comedy Album of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2024. Martin has also recently appeared on the episode PALM TRESS of John Mulaney Presents: Everybody's in LA (2024).
