ABC's hit sitcom The Middle premiered on September 30, 2009. After nine successful seasons, it wrapped up in 2018. Created by the duo Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline, the show explores the life of the Hecks, a semi-dysfunctional lower-middle-class family from the fictional town of Orson, Indiana. The series delves into the highs and lows of a middle-class family, from parenting challenges to everyday mishaps. Amid the constant chaos, the Hecks remain united.
At the heart of the story is Frankie, a hardworking mother, her easygoing husband Mike, and their three children: Axl, Sue, and Brick. Axl is the eldest, Sue is the middle child, and Brick is the youngest.

Eden Sher's iconic portrayal of Sue Heck in The Middle
Eden Sher's portrayal of Sue Heck in The Middle was nothing short of iconic. Sue isn't your typical sitcom teen; she's awkward, wildly optimistic, and often hilariously delusional. But that's exactly what makes her stand out. Imagine your friends, siblings, and your parents forgetting your birthday and then scrambling at the very last moment to make up for it.
Sher joined the series as a teen and spent nine seasons shaping Sue Heck into one of TV's most memorable characters. Her performance earned her a Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy role in 2013.
From her braces to her relentless drive to join every school club in every school activity, Sher nailed the charm and awkwardness of growing up.
Across its run from 2009 to 2018, Sue Heck became the emotional anchor of the show. Even when nothing went her way, she kept going. Her ability to laugh through her failure and keep trying made her one of the most relatable and inspiring teens.
After the finale, Sher continued working as an actor, comedian, and writer, and even released her illustrated memoir The Emotionary. For many viewers, she will always be Sue Heck.
