Netflix's new espionage thriller, Black Doves, received an excellent score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The story follows Helen Webb, who works for a mysterious covert spy organization Black Doves led by Mrs. Reed. While Helen is married, she has an affair with a civil servant named Jason, who is shot and murdered.
Mrs. Reeds sends trusted triggerman Sam Young to help Helen in finding her secret lover's murderer.
While the duo suspects that Jason is killed by London crime boss Alex Clark, it is revealed that it was Alex's son Trent who ordered Jason's murder in the Black Doves finale.
More on Jason's identity and death in Black Doves in our story.
Exploring the motives behind Jason's death in Black Doves Season 1
While Helen thought that it was crime boss Alex who killed her secret lover, Jason, it was revealed that it was Trent Clark, her son, who killed him in the Black Doves finale.
Turns out Trent was dating Chinese Ambassador Chen's daughter, who accused him of dealing drugs, and he accidentally pushed him on the couch in a heated argument. Unfortunately, Chen hit his head, which resulted in his death. This was all captured by Maggie and Jason's secret camera, both MI5 secret agents.
Trent killed Jason by hiring an assassin, Elmore Fitch, to hid the truth about his accidental killing. While Helen learns the truth and decides her next course of action, her partner Sam swoops in and kills both Alex and Trent with his gun.
In an interview with Netflix's Tudum, creator Joe Barton reveals Sam's position in taking the final shot on Trent and not letting blood on Helen's hands,
“The idea was that Sam makes a personal sacrifice for his friend because he loves her, and because, as you see in Episode 3, she sacrificed her own chance to get out in order to help him. He’s there to do anything for her, so he does it.”
Barton also added that while Sam had vowed not to kill innocent people, Trent wasn't exactly bad, but he did a terrible thing.
Who was Jason in Black Doves? Did he really love Helen?
Mrs. Reeds reveals Jason and Maggie's true identity to Helen at the end of Black Doves. They were both MI5 secret agents, and that is how Jason was aware of Chen's death and was able to fetch the recording device that captured his murder by Trent.
Mrs. Reeds also tells her that as a part of her cover, Maggie worked in a jewelry store where Jason got Helen's bracelet. She is able to track the store from the bracelet and finds the recording device in the safe.
She also learns that Jason pretended to spill the drink on her dress that night to initiate things with her because he suspected that she was leaking government secrets.
But in the end, Helen chooses not to learn about her secret lover's true identity and instead tosses the drive into the Thames.
According to Barton, this can be interpreted that she knew that he loved her, and she did not have the need to know him beyond what she already knew about him,
“She has enough information about him, which is that he loved her, and he saved her, and the details are superfluous because she's invented a whole new set of details for herself. … What was in his heart, ultimately, was the one thing that she knew was real, so that act of saving her was real, and that’s all she needed.”
