Black Rabbit is Netflix's latest crime thriller miniseries starring Jude Law and Jason Bateman. The show follows Jake Friedken, owner of a restaurant and VIP lounge in New York City called Black Rabbit, who lets his brother Vince Friedken come back and work in the family business, consequently leading to several problems.
The show features a musician, specifically a singer who plays herself in episode three of the show, titled Skin Contact, and also sings a cover of a 1959 song that won a Grammy.
Who is the singer in Black Rabbit?
Raye (Rachel Agatha Keen), the British singer and songwriter, is the singer you encounter in Black Rabbit. She appears in episode three of the series titled Skin Contact, and sings her own version of the song What a Diff’rence a Day Makes.
The original song was composed in Spanish, called Cuando vuelva a tu lado (When I Return to Your Side), written by María Grever. The song was first recorded by Orquesta Pedro Vía in 1934. It rose to prominence when Dinah Washington sang a version of it in 1959.
Dinah Washington's version won a Grammy for Best Rhythm and Blues Performance and reached the Billboard Top 10. Raye sings the same in the VIP room of Black Rabbit. Raye's version of What a Diff’rence a Day Makes can be streamed on Spotify.
Zach Baylin, co-creator of the show, spoke to Tudum by Netflix about choosing Raye, saying,
“We talked a lot about, ‘What’s the playlist of this place, what’s the playlist in the restaurant, what’s the playlist in the upstairs. VIP room?’.”
Baylin continued,
“While it’s very hip and trendy, it also felt like there was something nostalgic about the mood of the restaurant and what the brothers were trying to evoke. So having someone like Raye, who is both incredibly modern but also has this sort of old soul to her, really spoke to the mood of the piece.”
As Billboard reports, Raye spoke about her experience singing in the Netflix miniseries, saying,
“I am very grateful to Netflix and the Black Rabbit team for inviting me to be a little part of this series.”
She continued,
“To Miss Laura Linney for having me, it was such a privilege to play a teeny tiny part under your vision. Reading my very first ever ‘on screen’ lines, whilst staring into Jason Bateman’s eyes is a life experience I will never forget, hahahah!"
Raye continued,
“Regarding the music, I’m absolutely head over heels in love with Dinah Washington, who sang the version of this song I am most in love with. It’s always tough to cover a song sung by the irreplaceable inimitable voices of the jazz age but I hope my love of the song shines through."
Black Rabbit also stars Cleopatra Coleman as Estelle, Sope Dirisu as Wes, Amaka Okafor as Roxie, and Troy Kotsur as Joe Mancuso, among others. The miniseries has eight episodes and was created by Zach Baylin and Kate Susman. Baylin and Susman are also executive producers of the show along with Jason Bateman, Jude Law, Michael Costigan, Ben Jackson, Zac Frognowski, Justin Levy, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, David Bernon, Andrew Hinderaker, and Erica Kay.
Black Rabbit has multiple directors. Bateman has directed the first two episodes, Laura Linney has directed the third and fourth, Ben Semanoff has directed the fifth and sixth, and Justin Kurzel has directed the seventh and eighth episodes.
Production companies behind the show include Aggregate Films, Youngblood Pictures, Riff Raff Entertainment, Range, and Colossal Productions.
