In The Vampire Diaries Season 5, the Travelers are portrayed as one of the most dangerous and mysterious groups of witches ever appeared on the show. Unlike the Bennett witches or the powerful Originals, the Travelers have a unique identity, culture, and purpose that make them central to the latter half of the season.

The Travelers are indeed one of the oldest witch sects in the TVD universe, believed to have emerged around the Roman Empire era in Europe. As the name suggests, they are nomadic witches.
As a result of the curse put on them centuries ago due to their radical use of magic, they keep relocating and live a scattered life. Silas and Qetsiyah were their most famous members. Qetsiyah's immortality spell corrupted the balance of nature, and her counter-spell created the Other Side.
The century-old curse also stops them from using their powers after a limit; therefore, they developed "passengers," a dark magic practice that allows them to inhabit other bodies, while they never stay in one place to evade detection.
Travellers dissociate themselves from witchcraft as they believe in practicing pure old-world magic. They consider the current-day witchcraft as the corruption of their art. Their goal, therefore, is to erase spirit magic and lift their curse to return to full power.
What is the significance of the Travelers in Season 5 of The Vampire Diaries?
The travelers, fueled with the mission to reverse the curse, believe that the blood of the last living doppelgängers, Stefan and Elena, is crucial. We learn in season 5 of The Vampire Diaries that the Travelers want to entomb Silas and eliminate Katherine, who shares their bloodline.
Katherine’s lineage is revealed to be Traveler-based through her father, which explains why she calls them untrustworthy and manipulative. Their fixation with doppelgängers intensifies when they corner Elena and Stefan, drawing their blood for mysterious experiments.
As the season continues, the Travellers escalate their involvement by allying with Dr. Wes Maxfield. They experiment with doppelgänger blood and the ripper virus, trapping Damon and Enzo to test their endurance.
Eventually, Sloan and other Travelers uncover that one last Stefan doppelgänger exists, jeopardising their plans. This forces them to manipulate Caroline and Enzo into helping eliminate him, reinforcing their ruthless, utilitarian mindset in The Vampire Diaries.
