Abbott Elementary Season 5 premiered on October 1, with a brand-new episode releasing every week. However, after six episodes were released, the show has largely been absent in November. This is owing to the fact that the show is currently on a scheduled break, which will end in December. This break has resulted in no new episodes from the comedy show during one of the major American holidays, Thanksgiving.

While Thanksgiving is one of the most important American festivals, it is seldom seen celebrated on the ABC show. In fact, Abbott Elementary has never featured a Thanksgiving episode. There are multiple reasons contributing to this, so keep reading to find out more.

Abbott Elementary, a workplace comedy, follows a group of teachers working at the titular school with a found family factor, where they're teaching kids and juggling everything that comes with public schools. The show has featured episodes around other major holidays such as Christmas and Halloween. However, throughout the five seasons, there hasn't been a Thanksgiving episode.

There are multiple reasons contributing to this, the first of which is how the schedule is planned out. Abbott Elementary typically airs its first episode of the season in September or October and wraps up the 22-episode run by May. Throughout this run, they generally take a scheduled break in late November.

For Season 5, which premiered in October, this multi-week scheduled break was in November, and the sixth episode, released on November 5, is set to be followed by Episode 7 on December 3. This schedule ensures that there is no Abbott Elementary episode during Thanksgiving. In a previous conversation with Vulture, Quinta Brunson explained how scheduling affects the choice of a holiday episode:

"We get an airing schedule at the beginning of the year. I’d love to do a Thanksgiving episode, but we have not gotten Thanksgiving on the schedule yet. When we find out that we have an episode that’s close to Halloween, or Valentine’s Day, or Christmas, that’s when we know what kind of holiday episode we can do. It’s fun; I’m a huge fan."

She went on to add:

"It’s one of the beautiful things of network TV — airing around a date, as opposed to a binge when you’re airing all at once. It’s nice to know we’re airing at a time and put people in the festive holiday spirit."

So, even though scheduling is the main reason why there is no Thanksgiving episode for Abbott Elementary, another very popular sitcom, Friends is famously known for its Thanksgiving episodes, where the American holiday is acknowledged. The found family of friends comes together to celebrate it, making such scheduling a possibility.

For Abbott Elementary, however, the sitcom focuses on teachers and pupils, so Halloween is famously a big holiday that involves kids and schools, making it an impactful holiday in a school. For Christmas and Thanksgiving, which are traditionally more family-focused holidays, the show chooses to explore Christmas with the found family of the teachers.

The lack of Thanksgiving episodes also ensures that a season doesn't have festive holidays all through October, November, and December, considering how closely these holidays are placed.

Therefore, while scheduling plays a huge role in the ABC workplace sitcom not featuring a Thanksgiving episode, it is more than likely a conscious choice.
