Why do Carol’s negative emotions kill people in Pluribus? Explained in depth

Vince Gilligan gave humanity a happy pandemic in Pluribus, which is, sort of, freaky too. The latest TV show currently running on Apple TV+ is about a virus, which we can call a 'happiness Virus' for now, that was transmitted from space that created a hive mind.

A hive mind is a concept of shared intelligence where everyone becomes one. In simple terms, every human on this planet is connected except for 12 individuals, including Rhea Seehorn's Carol Sturka. This number increases to 13 in the second episode, when another individual wakes up aware in his own consciousness.

However, there's an interesting thing happening in it. There's a hive mind on one side and the other individuals with their own consciousness. And the problem is, this hive mind is susceptible to negative emotions like anger. So, when Carol screams at Zosia (Karolina Wydra), it sends all the people of the world into a seizure-like state, which also kills some people.

How many people did Carol kill in Pluribus?

The moment Carol shows her frustration and sends Zosia and others into that seizure-like state, she kills some, well, more than some, people worldwide. And when she asks about how many she killed, Zosia becomes reluctant.

However, the Pluribus protagonist, when she realizes that her reaction has killed people, throws up in her garden, where she is digging a grave for her darling Helen (Miriam Shor), who died when the virus was taking over the world.

Though Pluribus reveals this in a moment of argument, when all the English-speaking individuals, who are not affected by the 'happiness virus,' are having a meal prepared by "them," which is one of the ways to address people connected to the hive mind.

Carol finds her rival in Laxmi (Menik Gooneratne), an Indian with her family, who reveals that her grandfather also died in the aftermath (not from the seizure, remember this), an accident, to be precise.

And when Carol finds out during lunch that 886 million died in the 'happiness virus' takeover and despises the hive mind, Laxmi reveals that Carol added 11 million to that number.

But that number has certainly gone up, as Carol again loses her temper, which causes another seizure in the people connected to the hive mind. We don't know how many that killed, though, and Zosia is unlikely to break Carol's heart by telling her the truth.

Carol has to control her temper to avoid more damage

This is certainly one question about Pluribus that we need to ask.

One, because the situation is already complicated and there are no scientists to figure out how to reverse this, at least not any English-speaking ones. And "they" certainly won't help Carol out in this.

Two, because if Carol keeps showing her anger and walking while yelling around, she is likely to kill more and more people this way. Now, if she really wants to save the world, she needs to save the people from herself. Because even if the 'happiness virus' is somehow eliminated in Pluribus, Carol will be regretting that for the rest of her life.
