Amazon Prime Video has canceled Countdown, the action-packed thriller series with Jensen Ackles in the leading role, after one season.

The series started on June 25, 2025, and ended on September 3, 2025, with 13 episodes aired in total. The show had high rankings on Nielsen's and Prime Video's Top 10 charts, but was reportedly cancelled due to the global viewership being less than expected.

Following the life of a Los Angeles police officer, Mark Meachum joins a secret federal task force. He has to uncover a conspiracy that’s apparently threatening LA. However, amidst the initial hype and fan support, Countdown was not greenlit for a second season.

Deadline reports that despite the strong performance in the US, Countdown failed to develop a large international audience. The show hit #8 on Nielsen’s Streaming Originals list during its tenure, but its world coverage was nonetheless not enough to warrant a renewal decision.

The show's significant production costs made it necessary for the international audience to be large enough so that the project could at least break even. For a renewal decision, streaming companies, including Amazon, consider worldwide audience engagement as a must-have factor, especially for action-oriented content, which is expensive to produce.

Countdown, unlike other successful Prime Video action series like Reacher, Bosch, and Cross, was unable to seize the limelight of critical acclaim as well as widespread global viewership.

With 33% on Rotten Tomatoes and 50/100 on Metacritic, Countdown's ratings indicated mostly negative critical reception. The critics tagged the series as cliché-ridden, with poor writing and a lack of character development.

The first season of the series ended with a big cliffhanger, which was the kidnapping of Special Agent Amber Oliveras (Jessica Camacho). In the last episode, the villain, Todd, kidnapped Oliveras because he thought she was the weakest member of the team.

The suspense of this ending kept the audience wanting more, but the cancellation of the show has now made the story incomplete. In August 2025, Creator Derek Haas had expressed hope for a second season. Haas told Decider:

“I mean, I would love nothing more than to do a Season 2. I got it all right up here, but I will leave that up to the audience. Hopefully, as long as the audience comes, we’ll keep making them.”

Now that Haas’ hope did not materialize, Jensen Ackles and other actors expressed disappointment about the cancellation. Ackles acknowledged the fans' anger and his own disappointment in an Instagram video, saying:

"As some of you may have seen already, Countdown did not get picked up for another season, Amazon have let it go, and it's a bummer… Sometimes you can set out to do your best, and you tick all of those boxes but it is out of your hands. That’s the way it goes in this industry. So that’s the end for Mark Meachum."

What is Countdown about?

Countdown is a police thriller that portrays the story of LAPD detective Mark Meachum, who gets involved with a secret federal task force after successfully stopping a massive attack on Los Angeles.

The secret cops are undercover from different law enforcement agencies, and their mission is to snuff out the danger that is already lingering in the city. The 13-part series handled corruption, moral dilemmas, and high-stakes investigations as its central issues.

The investigation is set in motion by the murder of a Department of Homeland Security officer, and the team is led into the case. The further they delve into the case, the more lies and conspiracies are revealed, hence they start to conflict over their individual aims while at the same time trying to save Los Angeles.

The drama depicted the mutual hatred between the agents as well as their individual lives; besides, it also brought forth the problems that an undercover unit always faces: always being at risk of getting exposed.

The season finale turned the tables completely. The audience was taken by surprise when it was revealed that Seth, who had been put forward as the prime suspect, was, in fact, framed by his ex-partner, Todd, who masterminded everything and was just using the situation for his malicious goals.

Todd succeeded in abducting Agent Oliveras, putting her through a life-and-death situation, which kept the viewers guessing about her fate. This plot twist brought to the surface some unresolved matters that were presumably going to be the basis of the second season's storyline; nevertheless, these will not be tackled due to the cancellation of the show.

The cast included well-known actors like Jensen Ackles (Mark Meachum), Eric Dane, Jessica Camacho (Oliveras), Britne Oldford, Joseph David-Jones, and Kofi Siriboe. The strong cast and expensive production did not help the storyline to keep enough momentum and freshness for wider audience engagement, thus leading to its early end.

The show's narrative ambition and character development potential were very clear, but at the same time, spoiled by the service's choice to switch its content investment for the sake of getting more subscribers.
