Stranger Things Season 5 Vol 1 has been one of the most anticipated instalments of the show. This volume marks the beginning of Season 5, and the buzz around it will remain till New Year's Eve, when the finale finally drops. Given that the show has had some extremely intense moments, and multiple deaths in the past, fans were worried that there would be painful deaths in Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 1.

However, there are none. Holly and other children are taken by Vecna, Karen and Ted Wheeler are fatally injured by the Demogorgon, but no one dies in the first volume of the final season. This was both a relief and a surprise to fans, and the creators, Ross and Matt Duffer answered why there were no deaths in Stranger Things Season 5 Vol 1.

Stranger Things Season 5 Vol 1

A very popular fan theory that was circulating the internet was that Holly would play a big role in Season 5, and that's exactly what happened. Holly Wheeler has grown up quite a bit since Season 1, and just like Will was taken by a Demogorgon in the month of November, Holly is taken too. While she witnesses immense gore thanks to the Demogorgon, Vecna had earlier developed a friendship with her, under the disguise of Mr. Whatsit, and promised to save her from the monsters. Then after making the Demogorgan bring her to the Upside Down, he traps her in his memories, reveals his real name is Henry, but still pretends to be her friend.

The rest of Stranger Things Season 5 Vol 1 follows the Hawkins team trying to find Vecna and rescue Holly and other children. While episode 4 ends in a way no one expected, this volume did not have any deaths. As Ross Duffer told Variety,

Once we decided we knew we wanted to do the Will power stuff this season, we knew that that’s how we had to end Volume 1. So there’s the low point of all the kids being taken, but the high point of Will has these powers. That was always the discussion. Vecna taking these children was the low point we needed for the end of Volume 1.

The first volume heavily focuses on the children being taken, and the crew not being able to stop Vecna. Will having powers definitely become the highlight of the volume, and a death could've ruined the one positive development. But since there have been no deaths in this season so far, there are far more chances of Volumes 2 and 3 being more bloody. Now everyone's life is at risk and anything can happen. The Duffer Brothers did tell The Times that,

"I would say season five is not as violent as season four, but it has the most violent death of any season."

This violent death, which might be the biggest heartbreak for Stranger Things fans will happen in either Volume 2 or 3, since it didn't in Stranger Things Season 5 Vol 1. However, when Variety asked if Volume 2 will be more bloody, Matt Duffer said,

I’ve said this before: The show is not “Game of Thrones.” I’m hoping it surprises people. But there’s no Red Wedding, if that’s what you’re asking. That would be depressing.

Game of Thrones featured the deaths of characters who were deeply loved by fans. The show was also heavily criticised for a disappointing ending. Thus Matt saying that Stranger Things Season 5 is not going to end like Game of Thrones assures fans that it will have a satisfying death and won't feature a death spree.

Stranger Things Season 5 Vol 1 is now streaming on Netflix. Stranger Things Season 5 Vol 2 will be released on Netflix on December 25, 2025, and Vol 3 will be released on December 31, 2025.
