Following the success and fanbase of the original Dexter series, Paramount released the prequel, Dexter: Original Sin, in December 2024. It offers a closer look into Dexter Morgan's early life of transforming into a serial killer.
Unlike a typical murderer, Dexter was trained to target only those who are a threat to people. In simple words, he became a serial killer due to his dark urges, and only attacks criminals or convicts. Luckily, his adoptive father works at the police department, ensuring his son escapes prison.
The prequel was well-received by fans and viewers, and it was renewed for Season 2. However, Dexter: Original Sin has now been cancelled due to various reasons, including low viewership, no concrete production plan, and more.
This means that fans who liked the show must not anticipate a Season 2. This will surely disappoint them, as it has affected the creator and showrunner, Clyde Phillip. Per Variety, Phillip claimed that the prequel "wasn’t handled well" and that he's unhappy with the decision.
The reasons behind Dexter: Original Sin's cancellation by Paramount
Despite having announced a second season, Dexter: Original Sin has been officially canceled. The decision came from Paramount in August 2025, just a few months after they announced their renewal of the show in April 2025.
This was unexpected from the network, as the show's fans were hoping to carry on with the characters and storyline in the Dexter universe. As mentioned before, several factors contributed to Dexter: Original Sin's cancellation, which include:
Lower viewership compared to Dexter: Resurrection: One of the biggest reasons why shows are renewed is the ratings, and the prequel failed to gather impressive views compared to the sequel that brought back Michael C. Hall.
Impact of the Skydance-Paramount merger: The merger between Paramount and Skydance has a notable impact on the Dexter universe. The president of Skydance and the new leadership team's arrival resulted in the sole focus on the sequel, leaving behind Dexter: Original Sin.
No actual progress on Season 2: Although a second season was announced in April, there were no established plans for production. The showrunner Clyde Phillips had told the writers and actors about a renewal, only to get a "tough phone call" later on that would reverse that.
Phillips seemed notably annoyed, as he had spent a year working on developing the Dexter expanded universe, as well as concepts for younger versions of characters like James Doakes and Captain Matthews, and a Trinity Killer prequel.
The creator mentioned the Skydance-Paramount merger and claimed that Chris McCarthy, who led Paramount before, wanted to continue the prequel. In the same conversation with Variety, Phillips said:
"He wanted me to be his new Taylor Sheridan."
The creator and showrunner also questioned:
"If they cancel ‘Original Sin,’ which is a built-in hit, how are they going to pick up ‘Trinity’?” Phillips asked. “If they do, I’d be delighted, but I don’t see them doing it."
Phillips was excited and passionate about a Dexter: Original Sin Season 2, with ideas not just about Dexter, but others, too. But the cancellation update left him disappointed.
