Renee Ballard is a fictional LAPD detective created by crime novelist Michael Connelly, the same author who gave birth to the character of Harry Bosch. She’s one of Connelly’s most important newer characters and has become Bosch’s spiritual successor in the books. But in the TV adaptation of Dark Sacred Night, the character isn't included.

This has left many fans spiralling with the reasons behind the same. According to reports, the reasons include timeline issues with the character, and the producers' conscious choice to keep the focus only on selected characters, which they already had. Read on to explore the reasons behind Ballard's exclusion from the Dark Sacred Night adaptation in detail.

Here is why Bosch didn’t include Ballard in its adaptation of Dark Sacred Night

Renee Ballard is a newer Connelly character who debuted in The Late Show in 2017. Possibly, when Amazon and Fabrik Entertainment were securing the rights originally to adapt the Bosch, Ballard might not have been part of the package.

Secondly, in the books, the character is already semi-retired and working as a private investigator when he first partners with Ballard. While in the series, Bosch is portrayed as an active LAPD detective by the final season. That clash of timelines made it tricky to introduce Ballard without reworking the show’s existing arcs and LAPD hierarchy.

Therefore, these logistical and narrative issues caused the showrunners to work with the characters they have: Bosch, Jerry, Edgar, Maddie, and Honey Chandler. The showrunners decided not to introduce a brand-new lead detective so late in the series. Instead of Ballard, the show leaned more into the protagonist working solo or with recurring allies, while Ballard's connection with Bosch remained exclusive to the novels.

As mentioned, Dark Sacred Night shows Bosch investigating Daisy's murder alone. In the novel, Daisy is shown as a 16-year-old prostitute. While in the show, she is 14 and lures men into hotel rooms to rob and blackmail them.

In the books, Bosch and Ballard chase various dead ends, like John the Baptist, before narrowing in on crime scene cleaner Roger Dillon, while in the show, Daisy's friend directly provides the game-changing clue that links Dillon to her murder.

Daisy’s mother overdoses before Bosch solves the case, as written in the books; however, in the show, Elizabeth overdoses after learning Dillon won't be jailed for Daisy's murder.

Therefore, we can say that the show kept Dillon as the culprit but rewrote Daisy’s background, Dillon’s crimes, and Elizabeth’s death, creating a darker, trafficking-centred story that Bosch pursued alone.
