Sofia Falcone's tragic backstory came to light in The Penguin Episode 4, when Dr. Julian Rush made another surprising appearance in the series. After Oz blamed her, and Sofia was left to fend for herself against the Maronis, she called Julian for help, which was the start of their complicated relationship.
Dr. Julian was one of the two doctors treating Sofia when she was wrongfully imprisoned in Arkham Asylum. While the chief psychiatrist was a hired pawn for Sofia's father, Dr. Julian showed empathy towards her, even consoling her, albeit intimately, in between exhausting therapy sessions. In Episode 4, Dr. Julian finally revealed that he helped Sofia escape from Arkham with Alberto.
Dr Julian's decision to help Sofia in The Penguin stemmed from a number of factors, primarily because of his romantic feelings and guilt over his actions towards her. Additionally, Sofia also manipulated him and used his guilt to get out of Arkham.
More on this in our story.
Dr. Julian Rush was introduced as part of Sofia Falcone's back story in The Penguin
The Penguin revealed Sofia Falcone's tragic backstory in Arkham Asylum, where she took mandated therapy sessions with Dr. Julian Rush. While she managed to escape that hellhole, the red-light EMDR therapy sessions continued in the present timeline, ensuring that Dr. Julian remained an important character in Sofia's life and a key part of her rehabilitation process.
While Dr. Rush initially appeared to be another of Sofia's father's pawns (like Dr. Ventris), he started questioning the therapy sessions and wondering if Sofia is actually truthful about her innocence. When Dr Ventris writes a false report to the judge on Sofia's father's insistence, confirming that she is unfit to appear in court, Dr. Julian emerges as an unexpected ally and claims to know nothing about the report. His growing infatuation with Sofia only increases as they spend more time in therapy together, but his morally unethical ways to console her were certainly creepy in The Penguin.
Between Dr. Julian Rush's association with Scarecrow and his creepy attraction towards Sofia, it is truly difficult to understand their true relationship. But Dr. Rush eventually proved that he is an ally by helping Sofia escape her confinement, and aiding her to rehabilitate herself back into society as a civilized person.
Exploring Dr. Julian Rush's motivations in The Penguin
Dr. Julian initially saw Sofia as a killer in The Penguin, but her continued fixation on her innocence forced her doctor to see her in a new light. When paired with his creepy and confused attraction towards her, Dr. Julian started questioning Sofia's conviction and started believing that she is innocent. His decision to help Sofia escape stemmed from his romantic feelings towards her. Additionally, he also felt guilty about the treatment and behaviour subjected to her in Arkham, which made him betray his profession and take such a drastic step.
However, Dr. Julian's actions in The Penguin also had another side, as he was unknowingly manipulated by Sofia Falcone. While she was genuinely framed by her father, she harboured a deep, violent streak, which even materialized in Magpie's murder. Sofia clearly saw Dr. Julian's feelings towards her and used them to manipulate and transform him from his doctor to an ally, and finally into an accomplice.
In a crucial scene in The Penguin Episode 4, Sofia confronted Dr. Julian by saying that he only showed up in her life again because he missed their time in Arkham. She attacks Julian by saying that he enjoyed being in control and helping Sofia rehabilitate gave him a perverse thrill, under the guise of 'help'.
This proves that while Dr. Julian felt that he was the one in control, Sofia eventually used his feelings and guilt to transform him into an ally.
