Why was Elena Gilbert sired to Damon in The Vampire Diaries?

The Vampire Diaries is a supernatural teen drama show that is developed by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec and is based on the book series of the same name by L J Smith. Starring Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley, and others, The Vampire Diaries is a popular show that had eight seasons and aired from 2009 to 2017.

The series focuses on Elena Gilbert (Dobrev), who is a teenage girl from the supernatural town of Mystic Falls in Virginia and falls in love with a vampire called Stefan Salvatore. However, a problem arises when Stefan’s older brother Damon also arrives and wants to bring back his love Katherine Pierce, who is Elena’s doppelgänger.

A love triangle gets created between the three and The Vampire Diaries became famous for this plot and the charisma of Somerhalder and Wesley. The show was nominated for various Teen Choice Awards and People’s Choice Awards as well.

Since the show’s popularity grew a lot, it led to the creation of a media franchise that included comics, other shows like The Originals, and more.

Details about Elena being sired to Damon in The Vampire Diaries

The Vampire Diaries is known for the famous love triangle between Elena, Stefan, and Damon. While Elena and Stefan were the first to begin a relationship in the show, the entry of Damon complicated things.

Soon, Elena’s feelings of animosity for Damon turned into love and affection and even though she was in a relationship with Stefan, she found herself falling for the charisma of Damon. The tension between the two was a highlight of the show and many fans were torn into two groups, as one supported Elena and Stefan and the other supported Elena and Damon.

However, a controversial incident happened when Caroline and Stefan found out that Elena and Damon were sire-bonded to each other. A sire bond originated from feelings of gratitude towards the sire and it was hard to break. The concept first occurred in Season 3 of the show and was used in the context of Klaus and his hybrids. When Klaus turned werewolves into hybrids, they became sire-bonded to him.

However, things changed in The Vampire Diaries when Elena became a vampire and Meredith Fell administered Damon’s blood to Elena. Nobody knew this apart from Meredith and when Elena beat death and woke up, she became a vampire and became sired to Damon.

As Elena struggled with becoming a vampire, Stefan tried to help her, but it only created problems. On the other hand, Damon was able to understand Elena better and therefore, Elena chose Damon and split up with Stefan. Ultimately, the two got intimate and began a relationship.

How the sire bond created problems for Damon and Elena’s relationship in The Vampire Diaries

The sire bond became controversial as Caroline realized that everything that Elena was doing was to please Damon and therefore, when Elena slept with Damon, it was unclear whether she did it of her own accord or only to please Damon. In a sire bond, the sired would do anything to please their sire. Further, Damon had problems in the past when it came to consent in his relationships and therefore, the bond was controversial.

In an interview for the podcast EW’s Binge: The Vampire Diaries, executive producer Plec said that, “We then had to do a lot of work to untangle the fact that they had sex while she was technically under the effects of some supernatural link."

However, Damon did not know about this bond between him and Elena and when he came to know about it, he tried to break it off with Elena. Elena, however, maintained that the sire bond did not affect her feelings for him, which were natural. She stated that even without a sire bond, she would have chosen Damon. However, the sire bond between the two was controversial in The Vampire Diaries history.
