General Francis Shaw is one of the most intriguing new faces introduced in IT: Welcome to Derry and if he instantly looks familiar, you’re not imagining it. The character brings a commanding presence to the screen and much of that impact comes from the actor behind him.

General Francis Shaw is played by someone audiences have likely encountered in several notable projects long before stepping into the chilling world of Derry. The role is brought to life by 71-year-old James Remar, a veteran American actor with a career spanning more than forty years. If the name still does not ring a bell, the IT: Welcome to Derry star is famously known for playing Harry Morgan in Dexter, the protagonist's adoptive father, who builds 'the code' to keep his son's killing urges in check.

James Remar has built an impressive resume of projects on both the small and big screens over the years, including Gotham, Black Lightning and Hatfields & McCoys.

More on this in our story.

Dexter actor James Remar plays General Shaw in IT: Welcome to Derry

General Shaw is one of the main characters in IT: Welcome to Derry, who is hellbent on catching the shape-shifting entity that initiates its cycle of violence and horror in the town every 27 years.

General Shaw is a trained and disciplined man, perfectly portrayed on-screen by seasoned actor James Remar. The actor began his career in 1978 with Malcolm Braly's prison crime film On the Yard. However, his breakthrough role came a year later in David Shaber and Walter Hill's action thriller film The Warrior, where he played Ajax, the mouthy enforcer of the titular gang. James Remar continued taking career-defining dramatic roles on the big screen and built an impressive resume with titles like 2 Fast 2 Furious, Blade: Trinity, Pineapple Express, Gun and Django Unchained.

Remar broke his image of a serious and dramatic actor with his debut in HBO's romantic drama series Sex and the City as Richard Wright, Samantha's love interest in Season 4. Prior to this role, the IT: Welcome to Derry star also appeared in popular small-screen titles like The Twilight Zone, CSI: Miami and Total Security.

Another of James Remar's career-defining roles came in 2006, when he debuted as Harry Morgan, Dexter's (Michael C. Hall) adoptive father in Showtime's critically acclaimed crime series Dexter. Remar played Harry Morgan's character till the series finale in 2013 and also reprised him in the sequel series Dexter: Resurrection.

In addition to IT: Welcome to Derry, James Remar's most recent projects include Christopher Nolan's 2023 biographical film Oppenheimer and Francis Ford Coppola's epic sci-fi film Megalopolis. The actor is also set to appear in Nolan's upcoming epic fantasy film The Odyssey.

General Shaw had a haunting brush with the entity in IT: Welcome to Derry

IT: Welcome to Derry Episode 3 featured a chilling flashback of a young General Shaw (played by Ginny & Georgia star Diesel La Torraca), who encountered the evil shape-shifting entity in the woods 27 years ago. This memory helped General Shaw realize that his childhood friend and a member of the Native American tribe, Rose, holds the key to Pennywise.

General Shaw tasks Dick Hallorann with using his Shining abilities on Rose’s nephew, Taniel, to uncover the entity’s hidden location. General Shaw's unique connection with Rose and her Native American tribe helped him escape Pennywise 27 years ago but he is hellbent on capturing it in the present timeline.

While General Shaw wants to find the 'weapon' and put an end to the Cold War, he is unaware of Pennywise's power and the endless limits of his manipulative tricks.

IT: Welcome to Derry releases weekly episodes on HBO every Sunday.
